Advice on firming (Mech. Eng)
University course discussion for engineering.

Re: Advice on firming (Mech. Eng)
I'm also looking to do engineering, although it would preferably be aeronautical or chemical. Won't be applying until next year though. I live in Glasgow and recently went to the open day and the Mechanical Engineering talk and was very impressed. If I remember correctly 60 odd percent of students went straight into jobs after completing the course, some with multiple offers. I would definitely recommend Glasgow. Although I'm hoping to apply there next year, I'm also looking at Strathclyde, perhaps a better option for engineering or science courses, or Imperial College.

Re: Advice on firming (Mech. Eng)Yea Southampton asked for all fives... curious did you do AB or BC calc? Bristol for example wouldn't accept AB Calc from me. I'm going to a Northeastern orientation thing anyway so I'll be able to see what it's like.(Original post by anam93)
Hey! I also applied to UK universities with my American (and Spanish grades) for Mech Eng. I'm from Barcelona but I go to an International/American school. Bath and UCL gave me conditionals for my Spanish grades and Warwick sort of went crazy and asked for 5's in AP Physics, AP Calculus, AP Chem and AP Microeconomics. I ended up declining their offer. I feel that universities in the UK are known by Americans who happen to be related to the field of study and vice-versa. For example if you are trying to get a job at an engineering company they'll probably known what the best unis for eng. are in the UK. Here in Spain for example generally people don't know about Imperial or Southampton unless they want to/have studied engineering or they are working at an engineering-related company.
I took a summer preArchitecture course at Northeastern and really liked the campus and the halls, I think it's a great uni for engineering so if you end up staying there it will also be a good decision but there's a great difference in £££!!

Thing is, people in America really don't know much about British unis at all... save Oxbridge, maybe Edinburgh. Science-y types might know about Imperial, and more recently lots of Americans have been applying to St. Andrews bc they added it to the American application system (and I guess bc Kate went there
). But "prestige" for most Americans means HarvardYalePrincetonStanfordMIT. I'd imagine relevant employers would respect a Bristol degree as "almost" on-par with those places though, perhaps "just below" Oxbridge.
I'm from Bermuda originally where lots of people go to British universities- I know a couple at Southampton. And we have ships that come from there...
Hi just out of curiosity, how does Southampton compare with Bristol??? Also if you did get an offer from bristol would it of been higher or lower than Southampton's. -

I'm interested too- how are American universities generally regarded in the UK? I noticed when I last visited a number of British students wanted to go to one - is that because they want a different experience or because they think US unis are "better" do you think?
In the UK the US universities that are known by a wider range of people are: HARVARD, MIT, YALE, STANDFORD, PRINCETON
However it depends of what course the student is doing. For example I was strongly considering applying to MIT, and when searching for universities in the US, i also learnt alot about CALTECH and University of California, Berkely, etc.
The reason i never applied to a US university is because the costs are super high, and tbh my parents wanted me to stay in the UK. Also UK teaching is probably better to be honest. -

Yea Southampton asked for all fives... curious did you do AB or BC calc? Bristol for example wouldn't accept AB Calc from me. I'm going to a Northeastern orientation thing anyway so I'll be able to see what it's like.
Also just wondering, is 5's the highest you can get in your qualification or can you get 6's?
Its just from what your all saying getting 5's is very hard yet the Southampton offer given to me (their standard offer) which is AAA in 3 Alevels is not extremelly high as you can get A*'s.
For example I am doing 3 full A levels and two AS levels (half a levels), and i am predicted A*A*A* in the full alevels and AA in the AS levels.
There are universities like Imperial who ask for A*A*A so would they ask for 6's???
Finally if you did get an offer from Bristol which university would you of picked out of southampton and bristol? Thanks -
Re: Advice on firming (Mech. Eng)Just checked, BRISTOL ask for 666 and Imperial as for 7's in Maths and Physics so surely 555 is not that difficult.(Original post by jonathancox)

At times like this is so wish i applied for Imperial
and maybe i should of firmed Birstol :/ who knows lol!

No, that must be IB... the highest you can get is a 5. We don't have any equivalent of A*. Probably would have picked Bristol if I had an offer because I hadn't visited Southampton before I got an offer and I knew my English family spoke highly of Bristol.

Oh okay, my apologies. And fair enough, Bristol is a better uni so many people do speak highly of it, I would of firmed it too but I want to get into formula 1 and that's why I picked Southampton(Original post by jonathancox)

I took Calc AB and then a separate extra "spanish math" class because the Spanish curriculum is longer than the AP one so all the Spanish students have to take more math classes to make sure we complete both curriculums!(Original post by jonathancox)

What they tend to do is take the average scores and make those 3's. For example for the past two years the AP Chem Mean score has been a 2.77 and 2.76 with a 31% of people getting 1...I've taken 6 APs, 2 last year and 4 this year and I must say that even though some like math, physics and especially chemistry were pretty hard it's a seriously worrying situation to see so many 1's!(Original post by jonathancox)
It can be somewhat easy to get a 5 though depending on the subject.... last year Calculus for example require 70% or so for a 5.
And hey, Southampton's gonna be awesome.
Also the 6's and 7's are for IB...my school just started the IB programme with the guys who are in a grade below mine and the high level classes are very hard!!

Re: Advice on firming (Mech. Eng)
Hey mate I'm curious how your AP Results went? Got a 3 in Mechanics
oh well. Other stuff was OK. Thanks for all your help btw.
I had wished I'd applied to Strathclyde but a friend just came back from visiting and said he wasn't impressed, which surprised me because I'd thought of it as the be-all-end-all of Scottish engineering. Anyone comment on that?
