Re: Dreams vs Reality
It is quite curious just how much of our lives we spend dreaming and how irrelevant they become in our thoughts during the day. It's not like we're disconnected from them that we don't feel a real response to whatever we are experiencing in a dream, just like we do to real events. It seems like the importance of dreams is primarily devalued by how quickly we forget about them and they fade from our conscious thoughts and memory.
I wonder how different it would be if most of the dreams were stored like memories. Would they mix with real life memories and become dangerous if we couldn't differentiate between them? Would they change us in any way? It would be useful for introspection, I imagine. -
Re: Dreams vs RealityPeople need dreams.Without dreams in reality the mankind would be poor. Dreams might be the engine which could animate our life.
Dreams as vision might change society. Some inventors, revolutionist and discoverers have ones and change our worldview. Why we shouldn't have dreams?Last edited by Kallisto; 13-06-2012 at 23:01. -
Re: Dreams vs RealityBasically, you are right. But I guess there are dreams which are worth to be real. Dreams could be an important inspiration for some people.(Original post by Alexok)
Dreams are projections of reality. Without reality there would be no dream, even though its possible for a reality, with no dreaming. Everything in our dreams are just memories or pictures made up from reality -
Re: Dreams vs Realityyeah thats true, like can give a different way of visualising something(Original post by Kallisto)

Re: Dreams vs RealityI think these a called lucid dreams. It is when you are close to waking up and you are neither fully asleep or fully awake. I experience it as an awareness that I am dreaming...I then feel I have free will in my dream...then I feel myself being 'pulled out' by the waking process which I fight as I want to stay in the dream.(Original post by Alexok)
Can anyone else be concious in their dreams sometimes? Its like when you have kind have woken up but realise your in a dream, and you can do whatever you want...
I also get sleep paralysis sometimes. It feels like I am completely paralysed except I can just roll over with all my effort, sometimes I try and roll out of bed to wake myself up. -
Re: Dreams vs Reality
Just as the dream me isn't worried about the real me, I shall not worry about the the dream me! All though the statements you made are non-falsifiable and may be true, it really doesn't matter as we have strong memories and logical connections of event sequencing in the real world - on top of everything being relevant to what came before it. The dream world has none of these qualities.

Re: Dreams vs RealityYou are presupposing that the criteria of reality is coherence and continuity.(Original post by Ryan_94)

If one knew this a priori one would know one is dreaming. -
Re: Dreams vs RealityConsidering the function of the human brain, it's all we've really got to go by.(Original post by snozzle)

Re: Dreams vs RealityI don't understand what you mean. A theory of brain function doesn't give us a phenomenological criteria to distinguish waking from dreaming states from the 1st person position.(Original post by Ryan_94)

Re: Dreams vs RealityHave you ever tried many drugs? It gives a surprising insight to the perimeters of reality.(Original post by snozzle)
