The torch has gone to Dublin as a symbol of peace between the UK and Ireland.

RAAD are complete fascists, and genuinely hated by nearly everyone in Derry.

Did the torch go to the republic? This thread is about it visiting Derry, which is in NI.
    It did indeed...

Let's just hope will.i.am doesn't grab hold of it and run around Taunton with it.

"Northern Ireland" would be more appropriate - there was absolutely no trouble in Dublin.

The ultra republicans will protest against anything that's orange. In this case the olympic flame.

Yeah, I guess we've had our tensions so hopefully this'll put it to rest.

Oh yeah, I forgot, we haven't had any tensions with Ireland since before living memory. Unless you count Sinn Fein thinking a minority opinion in Northern Ireland > a majority one (which is how the Good Friday Agreement works).

I think it's an absolute disgrace. At the end of the day, these people are only showing up their own city. It's once again, another attempt to politicize something that isn't political, and shows the province up in a terrible light once again.

I think the timing was bad - it was a stupid idea to have it parading through the city on the first day of the leaving cert exams, as if the students didn't have enough to be worried about without the inevitable traffic jams it will create.

As someone who just sat paper 1 in the city centre, I can testify that there were no problems.

Ireland is part of the British Isles and the torch is going round the whole of Britain (as much as some of them try to deny it) which technically includes Ireland. I suppose they wanted to bring it round the whole of the British Isles to show that the London Olympics is something for the whole region to enjoy.

As for protests. There's radicals in every country unfortunately for us Irish radicals hate us English.

Neither Ireland nor Northern Ireland are part of Britain. The term British Isles is contentious anyway, and many Irish people find it offensive. That isn't the reason the Olympic torch went to ROI either, it was to celebrate reconciliation in NI. The UK is hosting the 2012 Games, not the 'British Isles'. :nothing:

Whole of (Great) Britain = mainland Wales, Scotland and England. It excludes Northern Ireland and all other islands (Isle of Wight, Anglesey, Orkney Islands etc.) The Olympic torch is travelling around the UK. It shouldn't really be in Ireland but it was sent there as a gesture of peace from the UK to Ireland.

How is British Isles offensive? It refers to a geographical location. Nothing to do with politics. Just like Switzerland is classed a part of Europe geographically but are not part of the EU.

Anyway I'm sure there were a number of reasons why it went to Ireland there doesn't have to be one set reason!

I missed out the word great as I meant the whole of the British Isles and couldn't be bothered to keep writing 'British Isles'.

Pretty sure the one and only real reason was to signify the peace.

The olympics home nation is Great Britain & Northern Ireland - that's our Olympics team. Ireland have their own, it is not their Olympics.

Why do people feel the need to politicize something that is supposed to be free of politics?
Because that's when the world is watching them and they get the most publicity for their cause, not much point in having a protest when nobody can see it.

I do find it odd the republicans use the name Derry and not Londonderry, they are both English names, the city has never been called Derry, not even before the British invaded.
