Re: Olympic Torch Protests - IrelandIf you're getting burning sensation you should get it checked out.(Original post by Big Ern McCracken)
I'm getting a torch of my own looking at your sig, if you know what I mean. -
Re: Olympic Torch Protests - IrelandIt did indeed...(Original post by Psyk)
Did the torch go to the republic? This thread is about it visiting Derry, which is in NI.

(today infact) -
Re: Olympic Torch Protests - IrelandLet's just hope will.i.am doesn't grab hold of it and run around Taunton with it.(Original post by thunder_chunky)

Re: Olympic Torch Protests - IrelandYeah, I guess we've had our tensions so hopefully this'll put it to rest.(Original post by Gales)
The torch has gone to Dublin as a symbol of peace between the UK and Ireland.
Oh yeah, I forgot, we haven't had any tensions with Ireland since before living memory. Unless you count Sinn Fein thinking a minority opinion in Northern Ireland > a majority one (which is how the Good Friday Agreement works). -
Re: Olympic Torch Protests - IrelandI think the timing was bad - it was a stupid idea to have it parading through the city on the first day of the leaving cert exams, as if the students didn't have enough to be worried about without the inevitable traffic jams it will create.(Original post by Sdiff)
"Northern Ireland" would be more appropriate - there was absolutely no trouble in Dublin.
The ultra republicans will protest against anything that's orange. In this case the olympic flame. -
Re: Olympic Torch Protests - IrelandAs someone who just sat paper 1 in the city centre, I can testify that there were no problems.(Original post by Dubliner)

Re: Olympic Torch Protests - Ireland
Ireland is part of the British Isles and the torch is going round the whole of Britain (as much as some of them try to deny it) which technically includes Ireland. I suppose they wanted to bring it round the whole of the British Isles to show that the London Olympics is something for the whole region to enjoy.
As for protests. There's radicals in every country unfortunately for us Irish radicals hate us English. -

Neither Ireland nor Northern Ireland are part of Britain. The term British Isles is contentious anyway, and many Irish people find it offensive. That isn't the reason the Olympic torch went to ROI either, it was to celebrate reconciliation in NI. The UK is hosting the 2012 Games, not the 'British Isles'.

Re: Olympic Torch Protests - IrelandWhole of (Great) Britain = mainland Wales, Scotland and England. It excludes Northern Ireland and all other islands (Isle of Wight, Anglesey, Orkney Islands etc.) The Olympic torch is travelling around the UK. It shouldn't really be in Ireland but it was sent there as a gesture of peace from the UK to Ireland.(Original post by Beebumble)

Re: Olympic Torch Protests - IrelandHow is British Isles offensive? It refers to a geographical location. Nothing to do with politics. Just like Switzerland is classed a part of Europe geographically but are not part of the EU.(Original post by medbh4805)

Anyway I'm sure there were a number of reasons why it went to Ireland there doesn't have to be one set reason! -
Re: Olympic Torch Protests - IrelandI missed out the word great as I meant the whole of the British Isles and couldn't be bothered to keep writing 'British Isles'.(Original post by Gales)

Pretty sure the one and only real reason was to signify the peace.
The olympics home nation is Great Britain & Northern Ireland - that's our Olympics team. Ireland have their own, it is not their Olympics. -

Re: Olympic Torch Protests - IrelandBecause that's when the world is watching them and they get the most publicity for their cause, not much point in having a protest when nobody can see it.(Original post by thunder_chunky)
Why do people feel the need to politicize something that is supposed to be free of politics?
I do find it odd the republicans use the name Derry and not Londonderry, they are both English names, the city has never been called Derry, not even before the British invaded.
