I keep getting split ends even though I don't do anything to my hair :/
It's just so frustrating! I'm hoping someone knows what's going on because I definitely don't understand it :/ I've got quite curly, dry hair that's long enough to cover my nipples (sorry, couldn't think of a better way of describing it..).

I've been growing my hair for a while and went through a period of like 8 months or longer, where I didn't cut it at all, and ended up with quite badly damaged hair. When I realised this I started trimming my hair every 3 or 4 months, just to get the split ends off. Since then I also stopped straightening my hair pretty much completely, when I do I don't do it more often than once every 2 months

I've never blow dried my hair and I wash it about twice a week, every time I use a conditining hair mask instead of conditioner because normal conditioners don't really help make it feel nicer at all.

After every time I get my hair trimmed, my hair ends up considerably shorter but the ends feel really nice when they're not all split, so I feel like it was worth it. However after a while (about 3 weeks), I end up with VERY split ends AGAIN? Even though I don't do anything to my hair? How can that happen? :/ I don't want to trim my hair more often because even just doing it as rarely as I do makes me feel like my hair isn't getting any longer.

Please help me, I want to get rid of my split ends once and for all without having to cut my hair very short!

you're obviously not doing anything bad to your hair. i guess your hair was made that way and there is nothing you can do about it.

Things you might be doing that could cause split ends:

    - Washing it too often. This can stress hair out a lot and lead to split ends.
    - Towel-drying too vigourously, causing knots and breakage
    - Combing your hair when it's wet
    - Fiddling with it during the day, bending it and twisting it etc
    - Tying it up too tight
    - Not using the right shampoos and conditioner
    - Your diet may lack the right vitamins.. You need a LOT of vit.E and calcium for healthy hair
    - Brushing it too much. Don't take the "100 strokes a day" advice, honestly that will just lead to breakage
    - Sleeping on wet hair
    - Swimming without a cap (chlorine can be really bad)

^ If any of those apply to you, try to change these habits!
Coconut oil is AMAZING for hair. Once a week, pour the oil onto your head, leave for however long, rubbing gently into scalp, wash out with lukewarm water and a gentle shampoo. Baby shampoo is sensitive, otherwise look into sensitive shampoos.

    Hope this helps..

Thanks a lot for the advice!
Even most of those things don't apply to me, I wash my hair twice a week, don't brush it after I shower and only pat it dry because otherwise I gets really frizzy, like I said I have curly hair I do sleep on wet hair though so I'll try and change that but my hair takes ages to dry heh.

Instead of getting your hair trimmed, perhaps you could try trimming the split ends yourself? So you can rid the damage, without losing any length.

Also, I second the coconut oil - cheap, yet effective.

Have you tried maybe sleeping with a satin bonnet? Split ends do occur because of friction between hair and pillow cases so satin bonnet would act as a barrier between your ends and the pillow.

Also how do you tie your hair at night? Most curly girls use the 'pineapple' method (basically gathering all your hair to the front of your hair and tying it with a hairband) I find that helps a lot because your hair isn't rubbing onto anything although it can look a bit strange!
