iMac or Macbook?
Hi guys
I'm hopefully starting uni next year studying graphic design, and I'm wondering whether you think it'd be best to use an iMac or a MacBook? I bought an iMac to start college and it's been a godsend because it's so much quicker than my old PC, but obviously it's not exactly portable. My plan had been to use my iPad for the portable side of things, but after all the hype, it's not really that great, and there's not photoshop, so it's not really of use for what I'd be doing. Anyway, thoughts would be appreciated guys, thanks.

Re: iMac or Macbook?
Unless you're really going to need the portability a laptop can provide, stick with the iMac, unless the update to the MBPs is really significant next week you'll be losing a hell of a lot of power and will obviously have to contend with the smaller display. Plus there's the added cost of selling at a loss then rebuying the Pro.

Re: iMac or Macbook?
Photoshop is now available for iPad
But yeh, that's broadly irrelevant. It doesn't have the feature set you'd need to do the sort of work you're looking at. Its main benefit is the creative cloud integration, which is pretty neat with CS6.
I think you'd be able to definitely get by fine your existing iMac in your room. The benefits of portability probably don't warrant buying a new device unless your course will frequently require you to be working whilst out and about.
If you are looking at an MBP, wait for the new refresh to be announced next week before making a decision. -
Re: iMac or Macbook? If you have an iPad, then just take your iMac for your room. You don't need a laptop, really.(Original post by akidfromyesterday)

Personally speaking mate, i have both. If you're gonna do graphic design get an iMac. I have an iMac 27 and it is AWESOME!!!! In terms of portability yes it is no fun carting a 27in computer up 3 flights of stairs but for what it can do, i wouldn't worry about carting it anywhere.
The fact is, you will be using photoshop, illustrator and maybe preview or etc and having the masses of screen real estate helps.
I find 15 ok size but not big enough for professional graphics work.
