WJEC Geography Spec. B - anyone have any idea how to do the problem solving paper?!
I've got my Geography GCSE exams next week , although the week after i have the problem solving paper - now it's time to panic...

We've practised one or two in class, but i'm useless at filling in the matrix which helps you to write the report, and apparently the matrix is worth 8 marks if it's done correctly?

SOMEONE, ANYONE, please give any tips you think would be useful especially tips for the layout/structure for writing the report!!

    Thank you for your help

basically, we are doing the same, for now, go through bitesize, thats what i am doing as well, because i havent got any revision materials either

edit: you don't need to write the matrix as far as i know, but the examiners can see that u have actually planned everything which is kinda helpful

You dont get marked on the matrix, however if you do fail do recieve sufficient marks the examiner will check the matrix to see if he can award you any marks!

We've been told, if you can, just go straight into the report because they only mark the matrix if your report fails to gain at least half marks

So is it a risk worth taking if you do not complete the matrix, so that you have more time doing the actual essay???

yes, but its better that you have planned what you are saying, it will just help you right your report quicker, which is what the idea of the matrix is anyways

Has anyone got an idea as to how many case studies I should remember for the exam to get an A* ?

    I know these rather well-
    Dharavi, Mumbai (shanty town)
    kibera, Nairobi (shanty town)
    The Galapagos Islands (tourist hotspot)
    Cardiff, Wales (economic regeneration)

    Any ideas would be appreciated...

On the last question (part C) my teacher said you can only get full marks if you discuss the option that is the best but you HAVE TO explain clearly why the other options aren't suitable. Section A is meant to be easy, section B is a bit harder and Section C requires at least 1 side of righting and evaluating all the options.

Personally i wouldnt do that, if i have all the information quickly jotted i am less likely to forget what I'm supposed to write. The matrix will give me ideas which i can quickly put in the essay

The matrix wouldn't be too difficult to fill in as all the information you would need would be in the sources, you just have to build a little from that.

For the first paper the half and hour one I'm revising :
    Trade And Aid
    Interdependence/globalisation
Industry (primary, secondary, tertiary, quaternary,) and patterns of industry in LEDC's and MEDC's
There maybe more im just naming the ones in the top of my head

For the problem solving paper I was told to make sure I'm aware of the stuff we did last year but just briefly like flood defences, what makes something sustainable, positive and negative multiplier effect, its just using what you know to apply to real life you shouldn't know everything in detail just make yourself familiar with ways to solve the problems they give you. You should also be able to evaluate if something is sustainable or not.

THANK YOU! that's really helpful, I did practice doing a past paper on problem solving and on the mark scheme it mainly says you earn marks for discussing which is the most sustainable but you get the higher marks from justifying your answers/ explaining how it benefits the area and by discussing the positive and negative aspects of all the options.
