    Any future Social Workers?
Hey I am definetely considering becoming a social worker and I just want some questions answered

What do you want to specialise in? Children? or Adults? and what area concerning them?

What are you doing/did you do at AS/A Level?

For people at Uni - What university are you wanting to go/are you at? What made you pick the Social Work course at the uni?

Why do you want to be a social worker?

    Thanks guys!

Another question: How far do you want to move up the social work career ladder?

And another question: What work experience do you have?

I'm not a current student, but I've just qualified and am in my first job so will give your questions a shot...

I specialised in Children's social work at uni, did both my placements in this field and now have a job in that field. Not all unis offer specialist modules though, and taking a specialism doesn't tie you to getting a job in that area - a few of the people I studied with went to work in the area they didn't study (i.e from Children's to Adults or vice versa).

My A-Levels were in English Language, Government and Politics and Psychology. As I did the MA rather than the BA, I think my uni were probably more interested in my first degree, which was in Politics with Law, and my relevant work experience.

I went to Brunel. It was my first and only choice as it is my local uni so I could live at home and save money, and also it was one of two universities that my employer was willing to fund me to attend through a grad scheme they had. The majority of my "why social work?" bit is covered in my UCAS personal statement, which is uploaded to TSR.

Within the next 3 or 4 years, I'd like to be a senior social worker and to get my Enabling Others qualification so I can supervise student placements. Unless there are dramatic changes to the way things are structured, I don't see myself moving into management, as you have next to no client contact, and spend your time dealing with caseload management, performance indicators and so forth. Don't get me wrong, I'd love the kudos and pay cheque that comes with managerial roles, but I feel like I'd be leaving behind one of the reasons I got into social work.

Before starting my course, I had 2 years' experience working as an administrator in a local authority adoption team. I had also undertaken some social work assistant duties during this time. I also had a few months of volunteering with a Brownie pack.

Hope that helps a bit! x
