I would class it as more of a spiky word

It's all about the Kiki/Bouba Effect for me.

Above we have Kiki and Bouba. Which is which? Kiki is the angular shape of course. I feel that this is more aggressive. I also think Paki is an angular word and would be far less offensive if it was modified to Pasi. Although not as rounded as 'Bouba' it represents a step in the right direction.

In summary, replace the 'K' in the word with something else and all problems will be solved . . . .
I don't think there has ever been a post so deserving of my rep. Bravo.

I refer to pakis as pakis, and all pakis I've known (I grew up in a very "multicultural" city) happily used the term themselves. I'm pretty sure it's only offensive to dem white, middle-class people.

If a Asian person said to a English person 'You ****ing Brit' would it be treated the same as if a English person said to a Pakistani person 'You ****ing Paki'? I'm not sure it would be.

It does not generally refer to someone from Pakistan, simple as that. You seriously need to understand this, it's like saying n****r specifically means people from Niger or Nigeria. P**i is a racist and derogative to all South Asians. Some Pakistani's may use it as a term for Pakistani, but it is racist if used by non-South Asians, like how only black people say n****r to each other without racist connotations. Having said that, South Asians who are not from Pakistan rarely use this word. It has taken on racial connotations so has acquired the status of a slur if used by non-South Asians.

Same reason why black rappers call each other and themselves ******, but it is completely wrong for a person of a different race to do so.

Akala (Miss Dynamites bro) states: If a chinese rapper were to say, die chink, die, everybody would be like "what is wrong with this guy?"

And he's got a point. There is no answer. Black people call themselves it, Pakistanis call themselves it, but English people don't, and neither do Chinese, perhaps it's to do with differences within the race? Just a more encompassing name, like when we call people Chavs, they're the same race as us, so it isn't racist? But it is derogatory.

I read an Al Murray book and he described it quite well:

" you've got Uzbekistan where the Uzbeks live. You've got Tajikistan where the Tajiks live. You've got Afghanistan where the Afghans live. And you've got Pakistan...where the Asains live."

basically the meaning behind its use is what makes it offensive. lots of swear words have no real meaning, however the way they are said and the intention behind them makes them offensive. if blaploopalobalob became commonly used as a derogatory term for pakistani people then it would be just as offensive as paki. simple really. and all those smart arse ***** who call people pakis and then say "oh its just the right word to call someone from pakistan" no. just no. pakistani is an acceptable word, there are no rules that you've got to take away the end and add "i", thats just how most people do it cos tbh were all pretty lazy.

It's another one of those things where every other race is allowed to say something but if white people do it then it's racist

A girl at school used to walk round shouting ''Im a paki for life'' ''Hate Britain, Im a Paki''. She wouldnt talk to anyone who wasnt Pakistani, or at least looked down on them.

Well, **** off to your own country if you dont like it here!!

Im all for a mixed culture, as long as people actually appreciate the free and better education and all the benefits from living here. I find it a bit insulting when they are as rude as her.

Im a Brit for life- and proud!

It's been used to offend people in the past, and still is, so people are offended by it.
Brit, has not usually been used to refer to people in an offensive way/ people aren't offended by it. Although it very well can be.
That being said, I used to hear people referring to generally all (south) Asian people as Paki, they weren't saying this person is from Pakistan, they were just trying to belittle them and be offensive.

Also, I don't see the need to abbreviate peoples nationalities. When you do so, It can have negative connotations.
People from Pakistan, are Pakistani.. People from Britain are British.

But when we cut it down, It can seem kinda derogative... E.g
Example. "Excuse me Brit person" Vs "Excuse me British person"
Example "Excuse me Paki person" Vs "Excuse me Pakistani person" I just feel the shortened versions, If said in a certain way can sound very harsh.

Also, when would you need to call somebody a Paki? Why would you want to? You can't tell what everybody's nationality is, given there are many in the world.

Why is paki not filtered out?

OP, I totally see where you're coming from with paki-pakistani, brit-british. But i think it was cos paki was used as a racist term in the past, people still treat it as one.

i know this will spark loads of debate but im just interested as to why its like a british person being called a brit ... :/
Because the people who use the term 'paki' are so ****ing retarded that it's rarely applied to people from Pakistan, they just use it to describe any Middle Eastern person because they're so ignorant.
