St Mary's College Durham - 2012
I feel like there must be people other than me who are excited about going to Durham this October, so I've decided to make our own thread.
The idea is to discuss/gather information on relevant topics to St Mary's such as:
the Fresher's week timetable,
where to get robes for matricuation,
and the accomodation options available.
Currently I believe they're still planning fresher's week.
My letter says we move in on September 30th.
Matriculation will be in the Cathedral on October 3rd.
I've been told you'll become friends with lots of people from your college and societies rather than those you're doing your degree with, so maybe we can get to know each other now. I hope to see lots of you there!
Me:
I'm Olivia. I'll be studying Biology. I like to go canoeing lots and I play lacrosse. I come from London. When I've finished my degree I'd like to do Medicine.
How about you? -

Re: St Mary's College Durham - 2012I'm not at Mary's but can answer a couple of your questions.
- In Trevs gowns were being sold in college on arrival day and I assume the same will happen with Mary's; you'll find out when you arrive but you won't be expected to buy one before you get here.
- You won't get much of a say in your accomodation. You'll be given a form when you confirm your place which will ask questions about your personality and whether you want to share in your first term or a subsequent term. They'll try to put you on a corridor with people who answered similarly I suppose and if you're sharing in the first term I expect you'll be told beforehand and may be given an e-mail address for your roommate.
- Most of your friends probably will be from college and societies rather than your course but with Biology you'll meet people in labs and tutorials though you may find yourself sticking with other Mary's biologists; it depends on the individual.
I do biology for half of my degree so can hopefully answer any questions you have, however the course structure and modules are changing for your year's intake. -

Helloooo, I firmed St Mary's for Biomedical Sciences in January, but I've not had a letter
So yeah, I have no idea about any of these things.
hello(Original post by Ftn of Knowledge)
Hi! I'm William. I just firmed St. Mary's for History, but I have no idea about those things either...
i don't remember when i got my letter, but i think it was shortly after firming. however i think mine might have been because i had an unconditional offer, so my place is officially confirmed?
not sure. but they're probably really busy so will send stuff out later. you'll get everything after results day anyway!
i only wish they gave us more info sooner, i feel a bit unprepared not knowing anything until a month before i start!! some of the other colleges and most other unis have sorted out all their accomodation and we've not got a clue yet!
i'm not sure whether to share 1st or 2nd term, what about you? and what happens in 3rd term, i don't think i'd like to be sharing when i've got exams! -

ah okay, I'm sure they'll have to let us know the details at some point :')
I think the same, it feels like I should have done something by now :L I'm sure they have it all under control, but I wish I had a clue as to what's going on so I feel more prepared!
I've been thinking about sharing and don't know whether to share in the first term so you've got a buddy to stumble through the first term with, or maybe in the second term when it's a bit less awkward. -

Hii
I'm Catherine and I'm firmed at Mary's to do Politics
I don't actually know any answers to the questions, but I just thought I'd say hi
SO EXCITED

One of the reasons I chose Mary's was because it's so close to my department (biology) and also because i wanted a less 'rah' college.
For those who are doing subjects a bit further away, why did you choose mary's? i love the old architecture and it's easily the prettiest college on the hill! -
Re: St Mary's College Durham - 2012I second this!(Original post by canŵio)

Re: St Mary's College Durham - 2012I just chose it because it is absolutely gorgeous. It's quite close to many things and the walking will do me good(Original post by canŵio)

Re: St Mary's College Durham - 2012Hello(Original post by Emperiator)
Hey everyone,
I've firmed Mary's for the Msc Finance and Investments.
Just wondering where all of you came from? I'm from Germany and pretty excited about the Msc and Durham!
according to their website, about 15- 20% of st mary's students are internationals, so you'll not be alone!
I'm quite in awe of people who move so far for uni;moving to a completely different country seems like a huge step! (i thought the 300 miles i'll be moving was quite a long way).
what made you choose durham over anywhere else, or unis in germany? -
Re: St Mary's College Durham - 2012There are many reason for choosing UK and Durham. First of all I wanted to study abroad and improve my language skills. In Germany if you want to persue in your career, you have to study for at least one semester abroad and have done tons of other stuff... . UK is the closest country where English is spoken..(Original post by canŵio)

I didn't really look for Durham in the first place. I looked at LSE, Oxbridge Imperial ... but they are very expensive and they teach you the same stuff... just the brand name is different. Maybe that is really important in the UK, but back in Germany it isn't that important were you went... it is important what you can and I think, that the education in Durham is quite good.Last edited by Emperiator; 16-06-2012 at 15:06. -
Re: St Mary's College Durham - 2012in england some people see oxbridge and london unis 'better' than the others, but for me, after visiting cambridge i realised it wasn't for me and i live in london so didn't want to stay! for me the choice was about the style of uni - i like durham because it's the third oldest university in the uk and i like its traditions.(Original post by Emperiator)
