Re: TSR Virtual Share Trading Competition(7 HOURS LEFT TO ENTER)Okay that's great.(Original post by Axion)
replied in the other thread. Welcome aboard.
Leave everything to me. my psot tomorrow will explain everything you need to know
This is probably going to sound quite stupid but could I ask you to include a few definitions/explanations in the main post tomorrow? Terms such as: 'total return index', 'dividends', 'share price appreciation' (I assume that's just the value of the shares increasing) etc. and possibly an explanation of trading charges/fees etc. Obviously I will pursue some of my own research online but a bit of a leg-up would be much appreciated.
Thanks for your help. -
Re: TSR Virtual Share Trading Competitiondividends = payments of cash PER SHARE given back to shareholders. These are often obviously higher when companies make profits. For example;(Original post by UKiwi)
Okay that's great.

company A has 100m shares at £10 each and wants to redistribute £10m to shareholders as a reward. Therefore on the dividend date for each share you held you will now receive an extra 10p on top.
share price appreciation is just when the share price goes up. thats what appreciation means. The opposite is depreciation when it goes down.
In the UK for most companies you pay around £10 when you buy and when you sell, and you also pay 0.5% stamp duty tax when you buy unless you use an ISA which is exempt from tax.
However, there are exceptions to this rule. E.g. companies which are listed on 2 stock exchanges, one of which is Ireland such as Tullow Oil, then you have to pay 1% stamp duty due to their laws.
But you normally don't need to worry about these as they don't change often at all.Last edited by Axion; 17-06-2012 at 13:17. -

Re: TSR Virtual Share Trading Competition(ENTRIES CLOSING SOON - Be quick!!!)Just saw this.(Original post by Axion)
Hi guys,
I am setting up a share trading competition via a website for TSr only members. It will consist of a league table, and lenient rules but ultimately, it will be good practise for all participants (and its free). It is impossible to cheat by the way.
I already have enough participants, but it would be more enjoyable with more competition if there are more people playing. Some current knowledge will give you a head start but if not you will learn throughiout.
Starting rules are £10k and no resets so your portfolio will run forever.
You must trade shares listed on the LSE, so you should be in a time zone that can accompany this
If you're interested just drop a note here saying so
It will be fun and good practise.
Current Willing Participants:

What do I need to do if i'm interested?
1. drop me a note here saying you are, I will then add you as a friend
2. make sure you don't get banned on TSR!
3. YOU MUST add http://www.thestudentroom.co.uk/show....php?t=1010366 to your watchlist as this is where updates will appear
4. Relax, prep and wait for further updates!
I will probably set up the competition this weekend, so get researching if you like or merely leave it until I say what the next steps are. I must reiiterate though, all further details will be on the 'Official Stocks and Shares Thread'.
Good luck to all who enter, and I'll confirm your addition to the competition as soon as possible.
