Will i be suited to uni life?
Hello

Im only 16 and I know im not going to uni now, however I have a real cocnern that I wont fit in!
I dont like alcohol...purely to the fact that I dont like the taste or smell of it..and although I like going to parties, I dont go that often because 'im not part of the cool crew' yet also everyone just drinks there and gets absolutely hammered..
My brother's in Uni and when he first started he went out clubbing etc. tons and although its decreased abit now, he still goes out often! Apparently everyone does it..and i dont wanna be the one left out...
Do you just go out with the people anyway and just not drink alcohol? -
Re: Will i be suited to uni life?
You're only 16! Don't be worrying about university yet... I was adamant that I would stay at home for Uni but now I'm hopefully going to go away so it shows that you change your mind a lot when you start really investigating into university. The same goes for the taste of alcohol really. Even when you go to university you will notice that your true self comes out and you will attract people of your own group and interests. There is lots of societies and clubs which you can join as well so you're not feeling like you have to constantly go out to have a good time. Simply, don't worry!

Re: Will i be suited to uni life?
There are lots of ways to disguise the taste of alcohol. Many of these alcopops (VK, Bacardi Breezer etc.) are a lot like drinking a sparkling fruit-flavoured soft drink. Kopparberg and Brothers cider is also particularly sweet and not very cider-y.
And TBH, not everyone goes out all the time - there are ways, even at uni, to enjoy yourself without getting smashed! And don't forget that you can always just go out sober (that said, I tried that once, and realised that it's only the alcohol that makes clubs enjoyable!) -

Re: Will i be suited to uni life?
You're only 16, most people grow to like the taste of alcohol! I think I did drink every now and again when I was 16 and somebody was having a party or something, no much though. And when I did it was cider, I remember disliking the taste of spirits like Vodka, and especially Larger/Beer. But now it all tastes awesome! haha
I wouldn't worry about it, there's loads of people at university and you're bound to find people similar to yourself. I know quite a few people who don't go out, or drink very often.
So i'm sure you'll have no trouble fitting in, but i'm also sure by the time you're legal to drink, you'll like alcohol! haha -
Re: Will i be suited to uni life?
I don't really drink
I'm 18 and I have used my ID once and that was at my friend's 18th to buy one lemonade and vodka then I was onto J20s
I have friends at uni and tbh not everyone drinks! I went to my Friend's 21st at Caimbridge and we played games and not one person had a drink!
Also when I go out with my friends who drink I don't feel left out its still fun
There's lots of ways to be social at uni as there are so many clubs and societies dw you will fit in somewhere!!

Re: Will i be suited to uni life?
It's really no issue if people don't drink a lot. A girl in my flat doesn't drink often, (she's been out with us maybe 4 times all year) but she normally comes to pre-drinks and we all get on really well with her during the day as well (I'm living with her next year as well).
Not drinking at uni is nothing like the issue people seem to think it is. -
Re: Will i be suited to uni life?
I am exactly the same as you! Not gonna lie, that's actually the thing I'm most scared of about going to uni. But like you I'm only 16 and I'm not going to start until 2013 or 2014 if I take a gap year... anyway this isn't really answering your question but I was just glad there were other people with the same concerns as me!

Re: Will i be suited to uni life?
You're only 16, there is no need to worry. As a non drinker at 21, you can still go out to places. You don't need alcohol to have a good time.
I like being the friend people can count on, on nights out. Making sure they get home, and that they don't drink themselves stupid. Plus, you can always bring up events that happened, and remind them.

Re: Will i be suited to uni life?Oh how much you have to learn.(Original post by Namige)
Drinking at uni is mainly endemic at the low end unis. Otherwise it's not as bad as it seems.
