Changes to Peninsula College of Medicine & Dentistry
Apparently Exeter and Plymouth university which make up the Peninsula Med School are expanding independently.

From Jan 2012 there will be a med school at exeter university and a seperate one at plymouth.

Hopefully this means more places for med students

Or places split between the two? I'm sceptical about new places until it's officially announced.

Just incase there are extra places, don't spread the word

Would put me off peninsula if it won't technically be an institution anymore.

I thought that it was pretty much official already. I mean Exeter Medical School already has it's own website and at the UCAS convention I brought it up with Exeter and they told me it was official and that we would have to apply to either Exeter Med School or the Plymouth University Peninsula Schools of Medicine and Dentistry (What a name?!) I think that they're just awaiting GMC approval.

I'd be sad if I was there that in ten years time it wouldn't be around anymore, I don't know, I didn't pick my uni choices based on prestige (more like where would actually take me ) but it's nice when people ask you in the future where did you go they recognise it.

I don't know, it seems awfully irrelevant. The people who need to recognise it, will, because they will be aware of what happened. The people who don't need to recognise it... why not say "exeter medical school". It won't make much difference to them. Plus, For 2013 they are going to be seperate so only people graduating this year will have that surely?

perhaps we all look for different things. after all, there's nothing to stop even Oxford and Cabridge medical disbanding.

I'm not doubting the split, I'm doubting the 'extra places'. I think it's more likely they'll split the current allocation between the two. Could be wrong though!

Oh right I see! I've read the numbers somewhere but I can't think where I've seen them...might have been the Student BMJ. From what I can remember, I believe that Exeter will have many more places than Plymouth. I'll see if I can dig out the issue I read it in.

I went to the Exeter open day and they have split to two medical schools. Before they split, med students were divided between plymouth and Exeter, depending on what year they were studying in etc. Now they are acting as separate schools. They have the same course, and from what I gathered the same application process. I also doubt that they'd be more places tbh, as they had the same size of campus before the split :/ And if they do, I doubt it would be such an increase?

I was hoping to apply to Peninsula, but now the split has been announced I would be happy with either Exeter or Plymouth.
I don't have enough place to apply for both, so I have no idea which one I'm going to apply for.
What's the difference, other than campus location?

Number of places, I think Exeter has more. As they're new schools I think the course structure will initially remain the same as that of Peninsula.

    Thanks Myyrh

Exeter - More places, will probably have more applicants, therefore more competition.
Plymouth - Less places, more competition.

I would apply to both but I don't have another spot. *sigh* I can't decide which one I think I'd have more chance with.

It would depend on the individual UKCAT cut-offs (I'm assuming they'll be different ) Why don't you pick the one you would be more happy studying at ?

Yeah, that's true, they'll probably be different based on number of applications. That would be my decisive point, however I'm not sure which one I'd be more happy studying at. When I was thinking of Peninsula, I had no preference between the two campus', I'd be happy with either. I think I'm going to have to visit both and see which one I like more.
Thanks for the advice Myrrh, on the ball as usual!

Hey everyone, the peninsula split is most probably going to go ahead despite the general disapproval of the staff & students... Seems like the board of Governors are dead cert on it :/. It's going to be split into Plymouth Peninsula which will take all the dentists and 75 medics per year, and Exeter medical school which will take more (180 I think I heard somewhere, but this is not certain as I can't remember who told me). The course is absolutely fantastic, and we've all been told that the standard of teaching will not suffer . Personally I'd recommend Plymouth, as you get a bit more integration with the other students, and they're sure to continue the modern style of the course. Plus it's a fantastic city to spend your first two years if you like a good nightlife. Don't let it put you off applying to either! Xx

    Thanks for that!

75 medic places for Plymouth? Ouch. I imagine the competition will be very tough.
