Why does everybody hate communism so much? To me, it sounds a sort of good society, equal pay, equal cost of everything.... I know people will say 'oh but a bin man will get paid the same as a doctor' ... yes, but surely, a footballer gets paid more than a doctor in our society, so surely communism is a better society in that aspect?

The sheer volume of ignorance and misinformation mixed with people who think they know what they are talking about has pretty much been the bane of far leftist thought from midway through the last century.

This thread is simmering at the moment. In about 2 pages time it will be filled with mega posts with every sentence quoted individually making them completely uninteresting to anyone but the people arguing. Quotes from hayek and smith will be left right and centre.

One of my history teachers at school said she liked the idea of communism, it's just when people take advantage of it because of their nature that it turns into something controlling and oppressive.

Haha, well, there isn't really a valid comparison - "National Socialism" was really Hitler's own invention (he adapted Drexler et al, but he took German Nationalist movements of the early 20s and manufactured his own concoction out of them) - so the real analogy is Hitler=Stalin and National Socialism=Stalinism, or at least, National Socialism=Marxist-Leninism as adapted for later revision by Stalin.

In my opinion, Communism will never work because people are too material-obsessed and greedy. I'm not a left-winger either, I vote Conservative but I've never thought Communism was a bad idea.

The thing is, it takes away basically any source of luxury. Some people might refute this, saying 'well you see a Macbook Pro as a luxury, in a Communist state, everyone will have one' but I think quite a lot of people seek pleasure in getting that expensive laptop which Holly-Perfect in your class doesn't actually have.

Also, Americans are terrified of it and seeing as we are such strong allies with America, and America is the most powerful country in the world, it would be a bad idea. Mainly because it totally rejects their idea of the 'American Dream'.

I love this debate.

Is is probably an annoying answer, but read Animal Farm by George Orwell, it helps

It really is a "perfect system in an imperfect world" because it jut cannot work in reality. People are all different, and so equality is really hard to achieve both socially and economically. People are just not equal, that's how the world is and also people are not willing to work for other people as they are for themselves and their families. It just doesn't work. It's not that it's "bad" however if you look at Soviet Russia, that's easy to argue with...
