English Language and Literature LL4 20TH June 2012
    Hi,

I just joined the forum after not finding a dedicated thread to spy on for the fast approaching LL4 exam...

I'm studying Wuthering Heights as my main text and I have Dracula, Our Country's Good, The Tempest, In Cold Blood, some Thomas Hardy Ted Hughes (poems), Sylvia Plath (poems) and John Keats (poems) and i'm planning to quickly read Brokeback Mountain to reference for my wider reading (don't get me wrong, i don't know them all off by heart!)

So if you have any tips, feelings on what themes you want to come up for question 2 and any really good wider reading texts then post them here!

    All the best!

It's been a while since you posted and nobody's replied yet...maybe you should check out MarkedbyTeachers.com, TSR's sister site. It has the largest library of essays in the UK.

They've got over 181,000+ coursework, essays, homeworks etc.. all written by GCSE, A Level, University and IB students across all topics. You get access either by publishing some of your own work, or paying £4.99 for a month's access. Both ways give you unlimited access to all of the essays.

All their documents are submitted to Turnitin anti-plagiarism software, so it can't be misused, and the site's used by hundreds of thousands of UK teachers and students.

What's more, you can take a look around the site and preview the work absolutely free. Click here to find out more...

You sound like you have lots of wider reading to refer to so I am sure you will be fine. My advice would be just to swamp the essay with context and analysis and only refer to 2 bits of wider reading in each paragraph. Good luck with it all for what is such a hard exam.

    Are you on WJEC OP?

My teacher's said it's best to stick to one partner text, however I did want to bring in some of my own wider reading. I was told it probably wasn't a good idea because I haven't 'studied' the books?!

Yeah we're doing same paper. I checked the mark scheme and it said don't do more than 2 bits of wider reading. I would definitely add your own books if you can analyse them properly. I am only sticking to poems and plays because there easier to analyse. As long as you don't do too much then you will be fine

:O Oh man why didn't i know this at the start of the year! My teachers have been telling the class to refer to at least 3. He said its hard to have just one partner text, as its hard to learn it well enough to rely on it for ANY of the themes that could potentially be asked...

What themes are you wishing for? I really want Landscapes, Death or Social Class

As for two bits in each paragraph, wowza I definitely won't be able to manage much! My structure is going to be:

Intro - Context on Bronte/Time that relates to the theme, introduce Wuthering Heights

Then have three clear sections each analysing something about the theme and then compare/contrast with a different wider reading text.

Conclusion - Personal response to the question, whilst trying not to repeat what i've already said :P

I really need to get at least a C! I got a high C in my coursework this year and a high C overall last year. My teacher worked out using our UMS points if I get a D (majorly **** up) I could still come out overall with a C... So thats giving me some hope!

Also I think i'm going to just be totally blunt and concise, as they HATE people who waffle and try and make it EXCITING to read. Man i'm worried.

I am sure you are going to be absolutely fine with it mate. Just make sure that when using texts you need to use terminology and close word analysis to get higher marks. I am sure if you do that then you can probably push for a B. Also the examiners like it when you use the context and link it to your terminology and analysis. VERY COMPLEX. Thanks for the examiners reports and good luck with it all. The theme of death would certainly be a good one to come up or anything to do with religion

My teacher gave us a cool tip get really good marks from just one quote. If you identify the sentence mood/sentence type/clause type of the quote and then pick out a good piece of terminology as well. So for example you quote from the book "I am Heathcliff!" then write "this exclamatory sentence type, which includes the personal pronoun "I", reveals "Catherines" absolute binding love she has towards "Heathcliff".

this is the 3rd time im sitting this exam and i'm terrified. I need an A overall so I need to get 60/80 but so far every time i have sat it I have got 45/47 out of 80. In January I did the question on death which i could have written a lot about but i thought i had less time than i actually did so rushed it and completely went wrong. Last year I did the question on women.
My teacher told me to use four comparative texts/four main points - 2 fiction, 2 non fiction (1 post WH and 1 pre from both fict and no fict) but now i can't help but wonder if this is where i'm going wrong.
What kind of comparative texts are people thinking about? I seem to use Kazup Urishigo's novels a lot as well at Chaucer, Shakespeare and political speeches.

I feel sorry that this is your 3rd time doing this as once feels bad enough. Honestly I wouldn't do more than 2 bits of wider reading in each paragraph as examiners reports say this. Your wider reading sounds like it has good variation with it do I would just continue to look at many poems that cover a wide range of themes and perhaps speeches as well as they are easy to analyse. Good luck with it all anyway and lets hope is 3rd time lucky.

Same here. I managed to get a high C in the exam without reading the texts and a high B in the coursework for a high C overall last year. I think I got a C in this year's coursework, but I'm totally stuffed for this exam :'(

How is everyone feeling about the unseen stuff?

Birthday Letters is my main and basically my only text. Our teacher made us learn the whole anthology, but there are other texts we can 'use' along side it..

I'm not looking forward to this exam.

I need less than half for a B, but 65/80 for an A.

I'd love an A, but I think it is impossible.

The awkward moment when your teacher hasn't made any text suggestions.
    I guess I'll use ones I've studied at AS and A2 :/

we can do this guys, just remember P.E.E, try and get some context, and if your struggling to find something then just try and think where abouts it links in with other points in the novel!
