Re: 31 languages spoken in a British primary schoolTSR isn't even a reflection of public opinion among 16-21 year-olds let alone anything else.(Original post by laurenbowes)
It was sarcasm. Yes TSR is not exactly a microcosm of the real world but 95% of people certainly do not think that.
I'm not even exaggerating when I say that overall public opinion is, most often, the complete opposite of what is the case on TSR. -
Re: 31 languages spoken in a British primary schoolWhat's so unreasonable about it?(Original post by im so academic)
I don't agree with that. If you're living in the host country, you should be speaking the host language (at least most of the time). -
Re: 31 languages spoken in a British primary schoolI think if 95% of the general public felt that strongly there'd be some sort of sign. I was using hyperbole.(Original post by KimKallstrom)
You heard it here first, folks.
A good barometer of whether or not the vast majority of the public agrees or disagrees with something is to see if there were riots about it or not. Despite there being only two riots in our recent history: The Poll Tax Riots and last summer when a bunch feral kids went and looted everything because they could.
We're British. We don't riot. Your theory would fit well in France though.
Public sector workers go on strike, we had the student protests last year. If enough people disagree with what is being done, they do something about it.Last edited by laurenbowes; 08-06-2012 at 20:07. -
Re: 31 languages spoken in a British primary schoolWhat if you're born and bred here and still can't speak in English?(Original post by emdo)
Personally, I don't see the issue - the kids are learning english right? It's not like the second you set foot in Britain, you automatically learn the language... -
Re: 31 languages spoken in a British primary schoolThen you learn it once you are at school, or before, if you start mixing with English speakers on a regular basis. You can't expect a baby to toddle along to English classes at a few months old if it's parents aren't speaking English to them at home!(Original post by im so academic)
What if you're born and bred here and still can't speak in English? -
Re: 31 languages spoken in a British primary schoolThere were people before the Celts.(Original post by Beebumble)
Neither were your ancestors once upon time.
Human's did not originate from Britain. The closet you'll get from being a true native is if you have a pure Celtic line which is highly unlikely. -
Re: 31 languages spoken in a British primary schoolThat's different.(Original post by im so academic)
What if you're born and bred here and still can't speak in English?
But the article doesn't mention whether the kids were born and bred in Britain - in fact, in makes it sound as if they wern't born and bred in Britain (up to a certain point) so again, I still see no issue. -
Re: 31 languages spoken in a British primary schoolI swear that you had problems with English earlier?(Original post by im so academic)

Re: 31 languages spoken in a British primary schooli ****ing know right...(Original post by de_monies)
i swear that you had problems with english earlier?

Pathetic post. Your view is actually disgusting. The fact that your post is based on children makes it even more vile. The fact English is not there native language does not mean they have no human rights, in particular an education. Get a grip.(Original post by im so academic)

Is this what we want for Britain?
Attachment 154892
In a time where increasingly the English language is becoming devalued and children are being brought up not being able to speak correct English with correct grammar - is this something we want for British primary schools?
The school uses translators and all teachers are trained in EAL. This is ridiculous. In England as well. Either most of these children are immigrants themselves and cannot speak English, or they were born in Britain and still can't speak English. If they could speak English - there would be no need for translators/EAL teaching.
What are your opinions?

Re: 31 languages spoken in a British primary school
btw my parents are both teachers in inner-city schools in a very "multicultural" area and they assure me that it is really huge problem having kids come in with basically no English in many cases, and completely different cultural values and idea to our own. It is not a positive thing, and at best can be worked around through complicated and expensive efforts like using translators for every interaction with a child. You guys who think it's the most beautiful thing in the world should try working in those conditions and see how difficult it is to engage with children and families who can't speak your language, refuse to learn it, and basically have no idea that they're actually in England now.

Re: 31 languages spoken in a British primary schoolIt's not true that it's difficult to work with children and families who refuse to learn English?(Original post by Plums&Peaches)
Not true. -

It's not true that it's difficult to work with children and families who refuse to learn English?
the bit I highlighted.

Re: 31 languages spoken in a British primary school
Yes.. this is what we want. It shows a society which is willing to adapt and support and a very good education system where every child matters and this is an important note to remember. Multicultural Britain means that we are able to adapt and accept.
Each child often first starts to speak in their own first language but as time goes on they will develop their english skills thanks to schools like these. -
Re: 31 languages spoken in a British primary schoolHere I'll break it down for you. The fact that all of them refuse to learn English.(Original post by NB_ide)
That's a fragment and doesn't stand alone as a sentence, so I don't understand. What is "not true"?
