Has Ashley Cole ever missed a penalty? He always seems to step up and finish in shoot outs, but I might be forgetting some misses. -

Re: Most clutch player in a penalty situation?Lampard has missed a few and is quite predictable in which way he goes. Saying that he's ice cool in big pressure moments such as both Champions League finals and other huge games for Chelsea and England. Missed a big one against Portugal in 2006, but that's about it. Deserves respect for this as well:
Van Nistelrooy used to be a machine at taking them as well (the one against Arsenal aside). Totti, Zidane, Graham Alexander, and Le Tiss have all quite rightly been mentioned already.Last edited by Banishingboredom; 09-06-2012 at 07:42. -

Re: Most clutch player in a penalty situation?I'd have to go for Steven Gerrard, the amount of credit he gets for being a goal scoring midfielder along with Lampard considering the amount of penalties they take is overwhelming.
There's also a popular video on youtube of Totti practicing a backheal penalty in traning, not sure if he has done that in a real match. -

Graham Alexander was a very good penalty taker, as were Le Tiss and Shearer.
Of the current players, I'd have to go for Lampard. -

Re: Most clutch player in a penalty situation?I agree with the mention of Zidane, i've only seen him miss once in a friendly where he slipped and booted it over the bar but in terms of clutch, the world cup final, last minute penalty against england and golden goal penalty against portugal stand out for me.

Re: Most clutch player in a penalty situation?Going back to 'keepers, what about Ricardo? The Portuguese guy who had a reputation for saving penalties. Didn't he save a couple vs England at Euro 2004 without any gloves on? and then went on to score the winning penalty!
Joe Hart and Neuer are also good at taking penalties. -

Re: Most clutch player in a penalty situation?It has to be Balotelli as he has never missed a penalty as a professional player or you could pick Ronaldo as he has an amazing record with penalties.
As for keeper I would probably have Cech as he was solid in the champions league this year (where there was a lot of penalties).

Sure he slots them in against some 16th ranked side in La liga when his team is already leading 3-0, but thats not a proper test of penalty-taking mental strength IMO.(Original post by scotttb)

Re: Most clutch player in a penalty situation?Lampard might not miss the odd penalty but this season alone he's scored in huge moments such as against City in the League and Napoli, Benfica and Bayern in the Champions League. In fact I think he only missed against Fulham this season andche must have scored about 3 or 4 against United alone. IMO he's one of the most trustworthy penalty takers in the world alongside Lahm, possibly Drogba, Balotelli maybe Messi and Rooney.
Ronaldo actually misses a surprisingly high amount of them
