Re: 2014 Veterinary Medicine Hopefuls!Quite a lot of us are 2013 entrants, stalking the 2014 page! Ooh thank you, have looked at some of those examples but not sure if I've seen all of them yet(Original post by dizzeedollee)
Wow you guys are starting your personal statements already? o:
There are some examples in the TSR bank, some better than ideas but it gives you an idea at least of what you need to do

Re: 2014 Veterinary Medicine Hopefuls!
I feel so inadequate after reading all those statements. Like, I know I've still got plenty of time, but being the ultra-competitive, perfectionist that I am, I'm stressing myself out about everything - grades, work experience, everything. Am I the only person who feels like this, or is it normal to feel so rubbish?
-
Re: 2014 Veterinary Medicine Hopefuls!
It's normal. I'm stessing about everything too
But you shouldn't stress about WE though. You've got loads!! And this comes from a person who haven't done a single day of WE yet
(Just starting my first placement next week) I envy you. I wish I had more than 7 weeks already

Re: 2014 Veterinary Medicine Hopefuls!
Guys, I'm looking for a farm (diary or sheep) who takes 16 year olds for work experience and offers accommodation. It can be anywhere in Britain except the south (to far from me
). I was wondering if you know any places worth contacting before I start looking for them myself. Thanks in advance.
Btw it's just 13 days till my SG exam results
Sooo excited!!
-
Will keep an eye out and will ask around, but try your local butchers- I found my farmer through him and they can refer you to farms with lots of cattle, so that might be of some help(Original post by Nessie162)

Re: 2014 Veterinary Medicine Hopefuls!
I just had my first day of w/e at SA Shelter, and no way I'm coming back there tomorrow.
I've neveer ever, been so bored in my life. I've worked for approx. 1,5hr and the rest of the day I spent there doing literally NOTHING. I spent 20quid to get there, traveled an hour on a train + half hour on a taxi and suddenly it wasn't worth it
I need to find other placement somewhere nearer now... ehhh
These are good GCSEs(Original post by iwishtheskywaspink)
Does anyone know the worst GCSE grades that has managed to be accepted?
And if your grades are bad- do you have to make up for it in work experience?
(By bad I mean 1A* 5A 3B- I know they're not terrible but places are competitive...)
Uni's don't care about GSCEs too much so as long as you're going to have good AS and A2 grades, you're going to be fine.
-
Re: 2014 Veterinary Medicine Hopefuls! The general requirement for pretty much all the vet schools is a minimum of 5 A grades. Your grades are good and you meet the requirements but you need to have A*/A grades in science, Maths and English Language realistically.(Original post by iwishtheskywaspink)

You cannot make up for poor GCSE grades with work experience - they are separate criteria and one does not compensate for the other. Therefore you should try to ensure that both of these things meet the vet school's requirements before applying (check their websites!)
If I'm right I think Bristol are quite hot on GCSE grades and expect at least 6 A*/A grades, but I'm a 2012 applicant so things may have changed since I applied!Last edited by Cetacea; 30-07-2012 at 20:54. -
Re: 2014 Veterinary Medicine Hopefuls!
Will most universities (not including Cambridge) be more interested in an all round student at the GCSE stage or one one gets A* in the sciences, English and maths?
I haven't had my GCSE results (25 days left) but I already have one definite A* and am predicted A* in 5 other subjects and then 6 As (I promise I'm not trying to gloat) but I only have one science, Biology, that I'm predicted A* in and as for Chemistry I highly doubt my grade will be moved up, Physics I'm lucky in I get an A at all, same for English and Maths I think I've missed out on an A*. One of my A*s is also in Food Tech and from what I was told at my interview, that doesn't count.
So will Unis be more attracted to students who have all A*s in sciences, maths and English, or will they still consider someone who is an all rounder? -
Re: 2014 Veterinary Medicine Hopefuls! To be honest they just want you to meet the requirements, Cambridge is different but by the sounds of your predicted you'd still be ok. GCSE's don't mean much in the long term as long as you meet their 5A/6A targets, after that I believ they stop looking and then go onto 'have they got the right predicted A2?' 'what work exp have they got?' to get 5/6A's you need to be a good all rounder anyways really; you'll be fine, don't panic about results!(Original post by Moonstruck16)

Although higher GCSE's give you higher A2 targets which is useful I suppose, they go up anyways after AS. -
Re: 2014 Veterinary Medicine Hopefuls! As the above post says you must meet the requirements, but having top grades in the key subjects can't hurt your application! Although normally they only look at your GCSE grades initially to see if you have met the requirements, they may look at the number of A*s achieved at GCSE if they are struggling to differentiate between you and another equally well-qualified candidate. This may happen in either deciding who to call for interview or deciding who to give an offer to.(Original post by Moonstruck16)

The key message is: try and get as high grades as possible at GCSE as they may help you out later on. And don't listen to people who tell you that GCSEs aren't important, because they are!
Good luck with the results! -
I'm not sure as to how much work experience I need to get/plan. I'm aiming for 10+ weeks and have do far got about three weeks done (and 5 years at a stables), and plan to do lots more in the forthcoming year.
1 week on a farm - I'm going back to do more
1 week at a veterinary mixed practice - ''
1 week at rvc in one of the labs
How much has everyone else got so far/is aiming for?

Not really sure what to aim for at the moment but just going to keep filling it up.
Lab work at the RVC sounds great what did you do? and how did you get a placement?
Sounds good at the moment (you've got more than me anyway) xxx -
Re: 2014 Veterinary Medicine Hopefuls!
Hey,
I'm looking to apply post-grad for 2014. I have a 2:1 degree in Bioveterinary science.
I have worked 10 days in a veterinary hospital - small animal
2 weeks lambing (hopefully next february)
4 weeks at stables
And all the lab experience that came with my degree
Can i ask how you are securing your dairy farm, abbatoir and lab experience? I presume you are writing letters to farmers and owners? And how did you apply for the RVC lab?
What unis are you hoping to apply for?
xx -
Re: 2014 Veterinary Medicine Hopefuls!Heyy, just wondering how you secured your placement at the rvc labs. I've been looking for lab work for ages but there is none with in a 45 mile radius of me :s. just wondering if you wrote a letter of if they offered you a placement?? Thanks xx(Original post by KatiexZoe)

Re: 2014 Veterinary Medicine Hopefuls!I'm not sure if art is the right A level if you want to get into a veterinary medicine university. I took art at GCSE and it is seriously hard and I can't imagine what it is like at A level but ive been told by quite a few people now that it is considered a weak A level by the universities... Even though the work load is huge. Maybe you should consider maths or physics or something more academic based?? You could do art as an extra curricular to show diversity though(Original post by Kamaljot)
Im Kamaljot,
Going to Sixth Form soon, doing Biology, Art and Chemistry. Wanted to be a vet for AGES! Going to apply via the RVC gateway programme as I doubt I will get the 3 A's needed (I will probably get A,A,C). I also have no work experience but have a placement at a local Kennel/Cattery.
Good luck every one

Re: 2014 Veterinary Medicine Hopefuls!yeah just adding to this. The people who I know who chose art for AS have despaired, unless you want to do something in art 99% of people said it took over their life as quanitity was seemingly valued over quality and if they didn't constantly spend time on it they fell behind quickly. I'd just advise you to take massive caution when taking art/textiles, gcse to as is a massive step and you need to focus on bio and chem the most to maximise your chance of offers but at the end of the day choose subjects you think you will be successful in!(Original post by JHP1996)
