Child free Flights? No Kids Cafes?
I read today that 2/3rds of British flyers would opt for child free flights. Noisy childern was top of the poll for making their travel a bad experience, above a lack of leg room.

Personally, I would also opt for a child free flight having spent a flight all the way to Australia with screaming children who constantly ran up and down the aisles.

I guess im fairly old fashioned and would greatly appreciate going back to a society of 'children should be seen and not heard' As so often parents do little or nothing to discipline kids who are clearly disturbing others. I once had a child come and stand next to my table in a hotel cafe who just started screaming. They screamed for a good ten minutes before a parent even came to claim them. The child was not told off nor was I given any apology or even aknowledgement. :/

What do others think of having various child free zones - on flights, train carriages, in cafes or eateries etc?

I'd love a child free zone on planes and what not. I'm a mother; I appreciate not everyone wants to hear my son have a meltdown because we're taking a ten pm flight, he wants sleep and a toy we've left in England. Likewise, not everyone wants to hear his running commentary on everything that happened in Tangled, complete with direct quotes and facial re-enactments...

In fact, can't we just put the kids in cargo, give the parents some R + R?

I would use child free flights. I would also like to see child free supermarkets.

YES! If they couldn't manage completely child free supermarkets, how about child free hours?

Child free flights would be good for long flights when people need their rest! However I think making child-free zones is a bit too far, you wouldn't have elderly-free zones and I don't think this should be the case of children either.
We all have our bad days whether you're 5 or 55 at the end of the day I can see how people would feel like this though, I guess I'm just used to it because I have a 18 month sister!

Its very true that everyone has there bad days but children tend to be more vocal about them. I know the idea would be hard to implement but traditionally restaurants had signs that they were family or child friendly but now everywhere seems to have to be.

That's because elderly people know how to behave and communicate. Children don't.

To be fair whenever i am flying, i am TOTALY hating people with little kids who keep screaming and crying. That is the strongest evil feeling i keep expierencing in my life, I think i become a little Hitler at those moments wanting to start a chidcaust.

Personally, if you started having child-free flights to popular destinations, you'd be much better off just buying business class tickets on a normal flight as I imagine it would cost similar.

Flight to Australia then definitely. Short flights I'd take them if it was the same price but I doubt I'd bother paying more for them. You mentioned trains but I think the main reason people would want child free is for the quiet and on some trains there are quiet coaches which should be noisy child free as well as people shouting down their phone and drunk noisy people free too so I'd just like those to be available on more trains and actually enforced.

I would pay extra for that. I went in business class once and it was the exact same things. I don't mind it when they stay still and don't move but other than that children generally irritate me.

I'd totally pay the extra for a child free flight if it meant I got some peace and quiet.

Would be ideal to have no children on flights, but to make up for it there should be child-friendly flights especially for families, bright uniforms, colouring packs etc.
Parents seem to be outraged when confronted with child-free idea, which to a certain extent I can understand which is why both ends of the spectrum should be thought of, you know?
I hate getting kicked in the back during flights, but when you try to tell the parents they get so arsey. You just can't win!!

yeah they are extremely annoying. What I hate even more is the mother + child combo when a mother has a child that's too young to carry a conversation but she just decides to have a really projected one sided conversation with the child announcing everything going on in her life to all the other passengers... clearly just an ego trip. 'oh yes mummy is doing this and mummy is very busy in the office and daddy is this that and the other bla bla blah' NOBODY CARES!

somebody has gotta know what I'm talking about.

That's because elderly people know how to behave and communicate. Children don't.
I don't agree with that, I'm not talking about just the elderly now but people in general, there are plenty of adults that don't know how to behave.
This generalizes all children as being loud and badly behaved but that is definitely not the case as some can be very well behaved. Then you can get some adults who almost sound like they have megaphones and 'kick off' on just about anyone because they 'can't communicate'.
I don't think you can put all children in the same boat, just as you can't generalize all adults.

Or instead of child-free flights just be proactive with seating arrangements. If airlines herded children and their parents into the seats at the back and put all of the adult passengers at the front of the plane you'd get much more peace with less restrictions/the whole age discrimination thing. Children would of course be forbidden from walking forward to the adult section, and perhaps even soundproofing could be used. The same principle could be applied to cafes with adult sections and the like.

I know Ryanair/Easyjet don't allocate seats but to be quite frank if you're flying with them noisy children will be the least of your worries.

It's generally not a problem with the kids, but the parents who don't know how to properly manage/discipline their offspring or keep them adequately entertained on a long journey. English and Americans are the worst at this.

I recently travelled across Siberia in a train. Open carriage, no compartments. 54 people all pretty much lumped together in the same coach for the duration I was on the train, which was the best part of five days and nights.

There were plenty of families and plenty of kids. A western family would have been a nightmare, there's not a lot for a kid to do on a train for such a long time. The Russian families and their kids were no problem at all, and without exception were very well behaved and didn't disturb our group at all. Of course, they all came to investigate the crazy westerners in third class, but went away happy when we gave them chocolate and other goodies.
