Regarding the whole "all races have crazies" thing, I find it frustrating that whenever a Muslim person does something like this, the Muslim aspect is emphasised by the media - as if to propagate Islamophobia.

You wouldn't really hear "Buddhist man kills son" or "Jewish man commits suicide" or "Christian burns down building" etc.

I think this case is a difficult one to pin on a religious ideology as the man clearly had a mental illness, but general statements by people that actions of individuals are not reflective of their religion as a whole is ridiculous, obviously religious belief influences ones dispositions and morality, ie the actions they deem acceptable. In the secular countries we maintain a balanced morality of equality and individual rights mainly because we push religion to the fringes and give it very little power in society, the doctrine of religion if preached by the state as in theocratic nations like Iran - Where Religous leaders run the State under the authority of scripture, Sharia law - you have an integrated inequality between man and woman imposed by the state and society based on the words of scripture, it enables disgusting outdated medieval acts - the stoning of homosexuals , fathers and husbands abusing or even murdering their wives or daughters for such crimes as refusing to wear a burka or seeking higher education without permission, Stephen Weinberg put it 'if you want good ordinary people to do bad things it takes religion' - and it's true you don't get stupid acts like this spontaneously, and a major cause is religion
