Is higher English actually as hard as everyone says it is?
I'm getting moved up to higher English next week (currently in int2), I got a 2 in my prelim. Will I manage ok? And is it actually as hard as everyone makes out?

IIRC it's one of the hardest Highers, but probably has equal pass:fail ratio's due to this difficulty (It has one of the lowest A marks) It really depends on how good you are at English I suppose.

I was always average at English from Standard Grade to Higher, and I managed to get Bs all year through. The work can be tedious and boring, however you soon pick up the techniques for close reading as you do more and more practice and past papers. Plus, if you study your texts well and have strong essays you should do fine! I got a B in my prelim for Higher English which I was pretty happy with seeing as I ran out of time and missed out a number of questions at the end of the close reading which are obviously worth more marks, although in the exam I felt reasonably confident with my performance and I'm hoping for a definite A or B. Good luck!

Dont believe everyone saying how difficult it is, just put the work in and you'll be able to secure an A easily

I don't think it is difficult as a subject personally, the reason why people regard it as so hard is that it's literally the most boring thing known to man, and lots of people don't bother putting in the work because they consider it boring learning quotes or studying parts of a book/play/poem.

Is it a huge jump from standard grade?

It's a subject where if you enjoy it ten you'll find it pretty easy and probably do well. If you go in with an attitude of 'this is going to be horrible. I hate. I'm going to fail' then it will be pretty hard going. Just have a positive mindset and as long as you know you are working as hard as tou can you will be fine!

To anyone who's done Higher English before, can your teacher choose what type of essay you do for your personal/creative folio piece? Last year for Int.2 I wanted to do a creative piece (I'm better at them) but my teacher told me he wanted a personal piece. Will I be able to choose what type of essay I can do in Higher? And if I get any competition to doing an imaginative piece is there anyway I can convince my teacher into saying its my choice as it's my folio?

    Thanks

I second the boring part but double English where my free's are now are worst

It's really not that bad. The jump from Int 2 isn't high.

I'd say it's very easy to pass, even to get a B, but it is quite difficult to get an A.

Our teacher kind of nudged everyone into doing personal but there were some people who just went to speak to her and I think so long as their first draft was of a good standard they were allowed to use the creative in the folio. It depends a lot on the teacher though, because there was another class all doing creative essays. The one way to convince your teacher is to show them an example/draft of your creative writing/essay

Work hard right from the start and you'll be fine. Learn quotes from texts over the year rather than in the last few weeks like I did

No its not.. I have just finished A-level english language at college. back at GCSE the only difference between higher and foundation was that you wernt given the bulletpoints to guide you in the right direction.

People say it's difficult because it has the lowest A% of all the highers.
