Re: Atheists, what religious background do you come from?I can't believe you had to explain this to him before he understands his own weak arguments.(Original post by ExMuslim)
Why would the idea of hell bother a Muslim? Hell is for kaffirs, Allah will have mercy on the Muslims and grant them heaven. If they have loads of sin that's ok, since making pilgrimage to mecca can erase all sins even murder. Christians believe the same thing, just the other way around. Anyone who takes Jesus Christ to be lord and savior will go to hell, and hell will be an abode for disbelievers like the Muslims. Since each side is 100% sure of its claims hell doesn't seem to be all that troubling because it's gonna be for the other team and not them. I guess the only people troubled by the prospect of hell are either borderline agnostic/atheists or the uber religious who are terribly afraid of offending God even in the most minor ways.
He just wasted fractions of your life over a simple thing he should have comprehended a long time ago. -
Re: Atheists, what religious background do you come from?
Jewish --> atheist.
My family was THE most extreme form of judaism that you could possibly find, which is rare (the majority of jews are secular). When I left they stopped talking to me. Now it's 4 years later, I have contact with my mother but she says she can't mention me in front of anyone else in the family because they don't want to hear my name.
Always had doubts but pushed them to the back of my head from fear. Questioning things wasn't allowed, including in your head, because god could read your thoughts. When I was finally able to define myself that there was no god it was still difficult to do things (like riding a bus on saturday, eating a KFC, not waiting 6 hours between eating milk and meat, not saying blessings before eating, etc.) without feeling guilt. -
Re: Atheists, what religious background do you come from?
Non-religious I'd say... I remember learning about Bible stories in nursery/infants school, but I didn't go to a 'Christian' school and I was never told what to believe. Most of the people I went to school with are atheist/agnostic/non-religious too. I think if left to come to your own conclusions by looking at both viewpoints from a neutral perspective, nonbelief in a specific deity is the logical view to hold.

Re: Atheists, what religious background do you come from?
Hmm, grandparents Christian in varying degrees, mum... I'm not entirely sure, dad strong atheist, most of the rest of the family apatheistic.
edit: paternal auntie and her family, and her husband's family, I think relatively Christian. They've more than one bible in their house anyway. They don't talk about it, though, so clearly it's not influenced me.
Ticking the non-religious box because, though my grandparents said things about Christianity, there was largely no mention of god in my home life.Last edited by TimmonaPortella; 10-06-2012 at 14:47. -
Re: Atheists, what religious background do you come from?
Catholic -> Atheist
I have always gone to Catholic schools, and I was very into Catholicism. Then in GCSE RS we did "Religion and Life from a study of Catholic Christianity" which basically consisted of "A is wrong, B is wrong, C is wrong, ... , Z is wrong, but Christianity is really all about love". I couldn't see why contraception was so evil (nor could our teacher), I couldn't see what was wrong with gay people being open and having relationships, and so on, and this made me question Catholicism - I had always had a fairly "you either believe in Catholicism or you don't" attitude, being shocked at how many people in my school believed in some form of legal abortion.
So partially inspired by being driven away from Catholicism, and partially because I had to speak in a debate in favour of atheism (in our debating club we often argued things we didn't believe; it helps your debating skills), I ended up reading arguments for atheism on Wikipedia, and at first I rejected them, and thought they were awful, but I gradually realised I wasn't able to articulate why I disagreed with them, and gradually they came to make so much more sense than the waffle of however many years of Catholic education. -
Re: Atheists, what religious background do you come from?When looking at the religion minus the cultural interference, it is a beautiful religion. Nonetheless, culture always gets in the way and makes Islam seem confusing and horrible. It's sad really(Original post by SquaredCircle)
I know Muslims are meant to believe this. I just find it hard to believe many parents would actually. Mainly because their love for their children is far more real and tangible than their belief in god. Muslims are people too. They aren't brainwashed automatons. Maybe some are. I don't know. I choose to see the best in everyone -

Re: Atheists, what religious background do you come from?I understand what you mean but have you read it in English? And when I say English I mean an exact translation? Tbh I really do understand that some people may not know what to believe cos interpretation is crucial to understanding the religion but when you know the Arabic language it's pretty straight forward. Think about it, personally I tend to just focus on the main things like helping the poor and the needy, praying 5 times a day (not because I'm being forced to, cos that isn't the case, but because I feel a sense of peace within me) . In the end everyone makes mistakes and God knows that. It's not the same for everyone though, I suppose it's all down to your own opinion(Original post by SquaredCircle)

Re: Atheists, what religious background do you come from?
Hmm... my mum is a lapsed Catholic but has been a buddhist for over 25 years and my dad is from a CofE background but is atheist/agnostic as far as I can tell. So between being taken to Catholic and CofE services by my grandparents and buddhist stuff by my mum I've come to the conclusion that it is all a load of bull. Buddhism is just a slightly more coherent and useful kind of bs.

I'm interested in finding out the demographics of TSR's atheist population. Say what religion you were and when you left it and why if you want.
Just realised I forgot to put 'other religion' in the poll

Re: Atheists, what religious background do you come from?Why so full of hate man? Your anger and biterness is hardly a sign of the liberated. And that thing about Muslims killing their own fathers and brothers on the battlefield simply because they had a different faith is horsecrap. They killed those who attacked them and if their fathers and brothers were part of the offensive army then so be it. One sahaaba (whose name escapes me) turned away from his father to avoid him on battlefield so many times as he did not want to fight him- and yet his father continued to pursue him. The sahaaba was forced to kill him eventually. But yeah, your general gist that Allah is more important to a Muslim than their famiy is about right. Also, the whole death for converts thing that youre scaring people with...you might want to educate yourself;(Original post by ExMuslim)
If you believe this then why are you resistant to my assertion that your parents are liberal Muslims? Liberal/moderate Muslims are those willing to ignore certain uncomfortable parts of the faith, like killing apostates, to successfully function in the modern world. If your parents were conservative Muslim they would honor the tenants of the faith because the commands of Allah and his prophet supersede everything else, including family love. The fact they keep your atheism secret from your extended family shows that they know they are in error and would probably be pressured to force you to conform or punish you if the wider community knew. But I'm glad they're acting rationally, too bad your parents can't give life tips to those Muslims strapping suicide bombs onto their children.

I dont know what you were taught but this is what most muslims I know were taught and I grew up in places like Luton and Leicester.
Fun fact: My family are reverts from Hinduism
