Is University worth it?
When asked how much tuitions fees would be from September - Vegetta responded with the statistic of being over £9000.
Is the University experience worth it?
My brothers leaving university this year, I'm sure he can be smugly satisfied with paying £16,000 in contrast to our future fees of £32,000.
Eventually I would like to do a degree when I'm 18, hopefully. However I think the higher tier professions job market is quite saturated, so is a degree worth it? -
Re: Is University worth it?
I would say a degree opens up a whole world of new opportunities and job prospects that may have been previously unavailable, and therefore it is worth it in my opinion.
But then again, many of the really successful people you see nowadays didn't bother with University or dropped out (Richard Branson, Alan Sugar, etc.) So a University degree is by no means necessary in order to be successful in life, but it can help.
Hope that helped

Re: Is University worth it?
I think some degrees justify the fees i.e. medicine/dentistry. Afaik the government pays £250,000 per medical student to graduate.
Other degrees I think are useful in allowing someone to discover what they really want to do in life. Plus i'm sure it has a lot of social benefit. -
Re: Is University worth it?
Understandably, whether going to university is worth it or not depends on what one hopes to get out of the experience. A degree is becoming more and more important for finding work in the service sector, and with the lack of jobs at the moment, competition is as fierce as ever.
If you are going into a career route for which a university degree would make entrance easier, or is likely to offer a more preferable career trajectory, then it may well be worth it. With the new fees and the rates of pay, a lot of people won't be paying back the full amounts of their loans anyway. On top of this, university is generally an enjoyable experience.
It's different for each individual, but I think for a lot of careers, the pros still outweigh the cons. -
Re: Is University worth it?I see where you're coming from, shame there are only a minority of those people who are as successful as that.(Original post by Giant)

Re: Is University worth it?
If you know what you want to do, how to do it, have drive and ambition to see it through at 18 and it doesn't require a degree to do it then going to university may not be for you.
If you are not sure about what you want to do at university, given the new fee structure, it is probably worth taking the time to wait until you you have a clearer idea.
If you know what you want to study and that it will sustain you for the duration of the course, then it is worth studying for a degree. It may not lead directly to employment, but it will give you 3-4 years to develop your post study plans. It is also 3-4 years for the economic situation to improve, such that more job opportunities become available. -
Re: Is University worth it?
The evidence is pretty clear that a degree gives an average few hundred thousands pounds over course of your life. Since it's still a state-subsidised loan there is no interest and essentially no risk (don't get a job, you don't have to pay).
So I'd say it definitely is worth it in general.
otoh, it becomes a lot less worth it if you don't get a 2.1, and this is only 'private' benefit - if a whole lot of people stopped going to university and therefore most employers stopped asking for degrees, productivity probably wouldn't drop. -
Re: Is University worth it?branson and sugar came up in the 70s, not sure you'd be able to emulate their model now.(Original post by Giant)

Re: Is University worth it?
NAAAAAAH. There are so many alternatives out there. IMO better than uni. This is coming from an apprentice that could have gone to the LSE. All my friends now are at uni or still in college. Here I am, 20, earning over a grand after tax working 4 days a week. I believe university should go back to it's fundamentals and just offer courses for things like architecture, medicine etc... things that you really do need classes, lectures, buy books on, study on, revise on, take exams on. You do not need to go to uni to be banker, an economist, I'm training to be an account, without uni, I'm already ahead financially and academically of a lot of my peers and those that left on the same year as I did.
It still amazes me how everyone has it in their head uni is the only solution to their future. Trust me it is not and, some people just are not made for uni. I've seen a few. -

What is it you do exactly to make so much for 4 days a week?
Anyhow, I would actually agree with most of what the post I've quoted says. University is worth it if you want some serious academic study, not if you want a 3-year "holiday" so to speak. -
Re: Is University worth it?Just out of curiosity, what is this 'once in a lifetime' experience?(Original post by Mr Dangermouse)
Yeah. You only pay back what you can afford plus you'll have a once in a lifetime experience those three years. -
