    Official Dissertation Thread - 2012-2013
It sounds to me like you'll be fine.

Have a look at previous or similar dissertations or papers, look up similar questionnaires (or even any questionnaires at all) just to see the kinds of things they use. Consider issues that might come up, social desirability, ethics, how the questions will be scored, use of open/closed questions, etc etc etc.

Analysis of results was the worst part for me, but again, look at previous result. If it helps just copy and paste that research into a document, change it sentence by sentence to make it fit your own research, and just work it like that, adding and changing pieces and making it relevant to your own study with your own stats.

But it sounds like you'll be fine. Analysis of results is never as bad as it seems (although you won't feel like that at the time!). But I can't see anything that suggests you'll fail definitely.

Sorry if this is a bit early for everybody but I know a lot of people will be in my boat - summer holidays started, 2nd year exams over (or 3rd year if you're doing a masters Dissertation) and you want to start putting something together in terms of research for the old dissertation.

Mine is quite short - only 6000 words and it's scope has to be quite limited 'special subject essay'.

Just starting with some early reading at the moment, needs to be submitted in January so a little while to go.

Thank you. I was really tempted to start a thread up but I didn't know if it was too soon. :P

I'm writing the majority of my dissertation over the summer and I'm looking at the accuracy of previsualisaton in films (animatic storyboards). Been lurking around on the old thread too.

Sounds really interesting what's your course? I'm writing about the influence of apartheid on south African English and it's role in the OED. (need to think of a catchier title). When does it need to be handed in?

Yeah, mine needs a catchier title too. I'm doing a BSc in Film Production and Technology. What about your course?

Mine's not due in until the end of the next academic year but I know I'm going to be swamped by then and I really want to make sure my dissertation is really good.

I just finished year 3, and handed in my Dissertation over a month ago.

1 word of advice to students, use the thesis in the libraries from September to December. Don't leave it till early March like I did. Look at the layout, read at least 2 similar topics to yours. It helps a lot.

And prey you got a good supervisor. Good luck everyone!

Thanks for the luck and advice! Unfortunately my university dont really give us supervisors. Short of asking for general reading guidance, we're not allowed to discuss or hand in drafts of our dissertation to any member of staff. My personal tutor won't be able to help me at all, it really frustrates me,

We get assigned a supervisor depending on what topic we're doing. Thankfully I got a really helpful supervisor who helped me develop my idea but unfortunately he's retiring this year so I've got no supervisor next year.

I'm looking forward to this, even though it'll probably kill me inside

Seeing some supervisors next week to discuss what lab project I can do, and then I'll start reading on the topic.

It's strange that I'm looking forward to my dissertation as well! I think the fact that I had a horrid year and managed to come out of it with a 2:1 has motivated me to really try for a 1st this year.

Anyone else started stocking up on stationary just for their dissertation? I'm terrible for this!

How's it going? I've managed to make a dent in my reading but I must say I've been sidetracked. I need to finish my questionnaire by the end of the week!

I've already decided what I want to do for mine, but there's no one I know who's doing anything similar - doesn't help that there's only five others on my course, and I'm not sure all of those are doing the dissertation!

This is going to kill me. I hate essays as it is

Wow very early but then I thought about it and realised that it probably wasn't when you think of all the reading and summer prep work you gotta do. I'm hoping to do my dissertation on the role of leadership in group work and the factors involved in making the process a more productive learning experience.

I've been very sidetracked as well; not even started any reading or planning (other than the stuff I did for the dissertation proposal last year). I've been telling myself that I'll have June off to relax after 2nd year and then I'll get started, but I'm finding it hard to know where to even start.

What I really need is a checklist of things that I need to include in the dissertation and then maybe I can start working on it.

I think it's too earlier to even think about writing for the dissertation.
    Isn't it?

Perhaps writing the whole thing, yeah. One of our assignments last year was to hand in a dissertation proposal for this year coming. They've said that the best dissertations get at least started during the summer as there's so many people who leave it until the last minute.

And since I'm working at a desk all summer anyway, might as well get started on the thing (plus I'm going to need some equipment that's hard to get during term time so it's better for me if I can do that part over summer).

Nooooo. I still haven't got used to writing essays.

I'm still waiting for my dissertation proposal result because of a deferral. Once I get that sorted, I'll start drafting properly. I think our drafts are due for December.
