I have a right to waste NHS resources because I pay VAT on my chocolate
I was just told this by somebody else, this is not my opinion.
This person gets into illegal bare-knuckle fights for fun, and thinks that if he gets so hurt he needs to go to hospital, it's okay to waste the resources and time of the NHS, because he pays VAT on his chocolate and other things he buys from shops.
He says he is right to do this, because he is making contributions to the economy, and as such, he thinks it's acceptable to use NHS resources. He said he wouldn't mind if a doctor told another patient: "You're in a serious condition and are in a lot of pain, but you're going to have to wait 2 hours", so they can deal with him who got into an illegal bare-knuckle fight through his own choice, rather than somebody who is suffering through no fault of their own, because he has equal rights as a patient.

Re: I have a right to waste NHS resources because I pay VAT on my chocolate
Regardless of how he got injured, he has as much right to treatment as anyone else. Isn't that the point of having healthcare anyway? That people who need it can get treated? And whether he caused it himself or not, he would need treatment.
Now, that said, if it came down to someone with something self-inflicted like the fights or someone deliberately getting really drunk and then hurting themselves versus someone who had a complete accident/was a long-term condition then I'd rather the person with the long-term condition got help.
But there's only so far that can go. If the guy is going to die of his injuries if he doesn't get treated then I'd rather he got treatment than was left to die 'because it's his own fault'. No-one deserves that.
Basically, the guy has a right to treatment and he is perfectly justified in taking it, but I'd rather he avoided the situation if possible. -

He is right. And his justified in taking treatment. The whole point of the NHS is that it's free for everyone. Should we start banning people who partake in extreme/dangerous sports from going to the NHS? How about fatties? Or people who smoke/drink a lot?

Re: I have a right to waste NHS resources because I pay VAT on my chocolateThat's ridiculous, no-one has the right to waste NHS resources no matter how much tax they pay. It's there to be used not abused... I know there are issues within the NHS that need addressing but so many of their problems would be alleviated if people looked after themselves a bit. Stuff like this makes me so angry, it is so unfair on other people who need the NHS(Original post by Flyteryder)

Re: I have a right to waste NHS resources because I pay VAT on my chocolateIt's not pointless, it's a good opportunity for OP to vent and for us to discuss in what ways we are or aren't entitled to use the NHS, which is a good topic for debate.(Original post by Muscovite)
What a pointless thread -
Re: I have a right to waste NHS resources because I pay VAT on my chocolateYes, we should start banning these people from going to the NHS.(Original post by Roaroaroar)

Part of my university interview involved writing an essay on whether obese people should be treated on the NHS. I argued no, and most of the applicants, as well as the admissions tutors, agreed with me.
The NHS should be for people who are suffering through no fault of their own, rather than morons who let themselves get fat, smoke and partake in dangerous sports through their own choices.Last edited by Flyteryder; 09-06-2012 at 16:47. -
Re: I have a right to waste NHS resources because I pay VAT on my chocolateI disagree. Many health problems are the results of lifestyle choices. How far do we go with this idea? And what's the point in him contributing to the NHS through taxation if his not able to enjoy the benefits? We don't really have many privatized A&Es so it's not really people's fault that they have to resort to using the NHS. It's impossible to calculate whether his giving more to the NHS than his taking away and even if he was taking away more than he gives, people on benefits (which could've happened due to their own fault e.g. drink driving) do this as well and get more than they give.(Original post by Flyteryder)
Yes, we should start banning these people from going to the NHS.

Re: I have a right to waste NHS resources because I pay VAT on my chocolate
I'm not really bothered about the illegal fighter guy.
But I think that those 60 stone people who have to be cut out of their house shouldn't be treated on the NHS. All the extra super-stong facilities they need cost a lot of money which could be spent on someone else.
