Do you need to pass Maths GCSE to get into Uni?
So I'm not doing to great in my AQA Foundation Maths. I got C in higher unit 1 then E in foundation in unit 2 which I'm resisting on Monday. You cant resist each unit more than once (unless I do linear) now, so if I don't pass every unit im gonna fail
I'm on track to get B-A* in everything else and I want to do textiles, art (not sure what else) at A-level. I've been told that you need Maths to get anywhere in life, and I'm planning to go to Uni to study fashion design, so obviously this worrys me.
If I don't pass Maths will I get into Uni or a-level????!!!!
please help!!!

Re: Do you need to pass Maths GCSE to get into Uni?It's not necessarily universities which require you to have a 'good pass' at GCSE sciences / maths / english.(Original post by Eva_UK)

A friend was turned down from a graduate programme at a really nice firm because he had a C at GCSE maths which was under their minimum B grade requirement.
So basically...pull your socks up or it will haunt you later on in your life. -
Re: Do you need to pass Maths GCSE to get into Uni?Thanks! Yeah it's really unfortunately that I got the bad at Maths gene as my other grades are relatively good so people assume I'm not trying. I just really struggle to understand and remember the methods(Original post by freedomyak)

Re: Do you need to pass Maths GCSE to get into Uni?
Sadly LOTS of things require a pass in GCSE Maths. The school/6th form I work at make it a requirement for entering 6th form at all (regardless of the course). It's not for no reason that it's one of the main measures that schools are graded on.
All you can do is do your best and go from there. -
Re: Do you need to pass Maths GCSE to get into Uni?Well it depends what other A-Levels you pick as well as textiles, if it's science or maths related then you should try getting in least a B. But if it's not, a C will be just fine, so I'm sure you can do textiles in A-level and maybe University but I'm not too sure on Uni.(Original post by Eva_UK)

But it's not the end of the world, you need to remember A-levels are much more important than GCSEs, so when you do A-levels you need to try your hardest to make up for any grades you think puts you at a disadvantage, good luck -

Sadly GCSE maths is an important part of your qualifications to get anywhere in life e.g. university and even a job. Most people are unlikely to accept you if you don't have the minimum C or above grades on English, Maths and Science. I had to retake my GCSE at college in one year otherwise if I didn't then i'm pretty certain that the university that I will be attending in September wouldn't have accepted me, let alone being able to get a basic job such as a Sales Assistant. These 3 important subjects are the key ones to get at GCSE to prove that you have a basic understanding in each field.
I would suggest from experience that you may want to take GCSE linear maths with the Edexcel exam board because rumour has it in my college they are considered to be the easiest exam board to get a pass at GCSE maths. Instead of taking modules through out the year, you would just take a calculator and a non-calculator paper at the end of the year. I also suggest that maybe you find a Maths tutor to run over the things you don't understand, I eventually gave in and my parents got me a tutor. I'm almost certain if it hadn't of been from my one to one lessons I would have failed my Maths (I got a C in the end- moved up from an E grade).
You do have to be aware that most colleges will require specific grades in your GCSEs, however sometimes they'll ask for a minimum of passes in five subjects- not necessarily in Maths. The college I currently attend is/has been one of the top performing academic colleges in the UK and when I enrolled with them they never said anything about my E grade in maths at the time. I think I must have slipped through the net somehow!
Maths will be an important part of your career as a fashion designer etc because you will have to prove to others that you know how to do the basic things such as how many metres of fabric you need to buy, best buys you know that kind of thing. If you don't have a C in maths then unforunatly even though you may know the basic things in Maths you cannot prove this to organisations such as employers/colleges/universities without this maths qualification.
Like someone said above you should consider asking your chosen college if you could do GCSE or even Key Skills Maths alongside your A level courses.
Good luck.
