Homeless student gets accepted to Harvard

This girl is a true inspiration. Some people just seem to be born to succeed no matter what unfair circumstances they have to overcome. -
Re: Homeless student gets accepted to Harvard
Getting into Harvard is a massive achievement in of itself regardless of circumstances. However, I don't mean to discredit her achievements but this seems to be a bit exaggerated. It's pretty standard for college students to work part-time, around 57% of them work part-time (10% full-time) and they do fairly well for themselves grade-wise.There isn't much of a difference between seniors high-schoolers and freshman college students. But, as I said it's still a pretty good achievement and I'm not discrediting her hard work.

Re: Homeless student gets accepted to HarvardWow! Hard working girl. So amazingly difficult to get into Harvard in the US! She looks a bit like Dr Cameron from House.(Original post by ckingalt)

Re: Homeless student gets accepted to HarvardIt's not about being born to succeed at all. She is a brilliant example of someone who worked to achieve what she wanted to. I imagine she will continue to do so and go far in life. Putting this down to fate or even birth belittles her dedication.(Original post by ckingalt)

Re: Homeless student gets accepted to HarvardBy source, I assume you mean my evidence?(Original post by Formerly Helpful_C)
As everyone on this site likes to say: source?
There is no one source. Countless books from the fields of child psychology and education suggest that although some traits are heredity - including, some suggest, intelligence to an extent - success is a product of determination and work. -
Re: Homeless student gets accepted to HarvardSo you're discrediting the belief that everything is predetermined?(Original post by lauren_a)

Re: Homeless student gets accepted to Harvardthey look exactly the same in the pic with the blue graduation gown but she doesn't actually look much like her if you see the video :P
Still, good for her, it made me cry watching the video. To the person who said that other people work as well, I just have to say be serious, do you know many people who had no running water and had to study with candles and got into Harvard? It's not harmful once in a while to admit that some people are more impressive than us.
This story reminds me of a video I was watching yesterday about a homeless 22 year old who was living alone since he was 5 and made it into "Korea has talent" and had the most beautiful voice. It's not as impressive as the girl managing to get into Harvard but it still goes to show how determination and passion and hard work can make your dreams come true. I wish them both the best of luck -
Re: Homeless student gets accepted to HarvardAre you religious?(Original post by Formerly Helpful_C)

Re: Homeless student gets accepted to HarvardOne of the things the story hints at is how bad the homelessness crisis is in the states - millions of people are resorting to tented cities and soup kitchens. The position of poor people in the US is becoming like Africa or somewhere - yes, she is amazing, but she shouldn't have been a homeless person in the first place.(Original post by *Corinna*)

Re: Homeless student gets accepted to HarvardI don't see the relevance. It is a belief that everything is predetermined, so how can you say that her achievements weren't willed?(Original post by lauren_a)
Are you religious? -
Re: Homeless student gets accepted to HarvardI agree with this. This is an inspirational story that shows what one can do with hard work and dedication. Instead of copping out with the belief that it is predetermined at birth, we should try and emulate her ethic in our own lives.(Original post by lauren_a)
