A - Level English Lit or Sociology
    Hey,
I'm currently in year 11, going to move onto college. I've picked 3 out of 4 A levels that i want to do, and the 4 option has me in two minds; English Lit or Sociology.

    English Lit
I have enjoyed doing it at GCSE, and i am currently waiting for my result. However i have been told that english literature involves alot of indepth analysis and reading and i dont read, at all. English lit is a well respected alevel, which is why i want to do it, as well as enjoying it.

    Sociology
From what i understand sociology is the study of society, and how soiety affects people, ethnic groups and children. I have been told there are units about families and different structures. i like this aspect of sociology and i find this kinda stuff i nterestin. However sociology is seen as a 'soft a-level'.

I would really appreciate it if anyone could give some insights to any of the 2.

also the other a-levels i am going to do are: Biology, Chemistry, History.

    Thanks in advance.

Hey English Lit takes up a lot of time and I've found that out of all my subjects, I spend the most time on English Lit. However, it is a really interesting subject and really enjoyable too. You say you don't read, and it's inevitable that you will have to read to get a decent grade. (Although there's people in my class who claim they haven't read any of the set texts ). Do you not like reading or do you just not find time to read? Although I love English Lit, I personally wouldn't recommend it unless you really love the subject or are good at it, because I find that IT TAKES OVER YOUR LIFE!

Sociology is an interesting subject too, and I think it's the easiest subject that I take. However, your other 3 subjects are quite demanding (I dont take them, but I've heard they are hard). So although Sociology is seen as a 'soft option, maybe it would be better to take it, considering you are taking 2 hard subjects.

    Hope that helps

What do you intend to do after college? Go onto uni?

You've picked pretty respected subjects already, so unless you want to do English Lit at uni, I'd say you could probably get away with doing something like Sociology which is less respected.

I do both - Sociology is definitely the easier out of the two and is actually really fascinating! Lit is equally as fascinating, but is a lot of hard work and unless you're one of those who has one of the natural talents for it, it might be a little bit hard.

BUt yeah, like I said, depends what you want to do at uni I suppose.

I want to move into sciences at uni, so really the 4th AS Level doesnt affect me.

In that case, I'd go for Sociology. Far easier than Lit, less work required which means you can focus a lot more on your demanding subjects! And it's still very interesting too!

Sociology is easier to revise, you'll have more of a clue what the exam will be on, you won't have to spend time doing coursework and chances are the exam will be broken down nicely into January and June modules, whereas English Lit will all be at once in one day, so there's no chance for re-sits within the year etc. And Sociology is generally more interesting
