    Americanisms!
Which, in your opinion, is the worst Americanism?

For me, though it isn't an Americanism alone (international organisations do this also), it's when people spell endings with -ize instead of -ise, such as realise or organise.

I find it strange how they omit words like and and maybe from from sentences, e.g. when they say a year ("two-thousand-three").

And I also hate how they've ruined how we say numbers

1,000,000,000 should NOT be a billion, it should be one thousand million (or a milliard). A billion = a bi million, which implies two millions. Therefore a billion should be 1,000,000,000,000 which today is a trillion!

I hate how they ruined the number system, and I hate even more that we have changed our system just to fit in with theirs. Aargh!
I think their system is easier to grasp, which is maybe why* virtually everyone uses it now. :p:

I don't care, their dialects converse the point equally as well as ours. Language evolves.

I don't understand why people get angry about americanization (). Sure it might be different but so is the language we currently speak in Britain now and 100 years ago. Language change, get used to it. It's ridiculous to cling on to it, that's something children do. I'm generally quite fond of it. There's no need for the U in color.

I agree with the whole "ize" thing, it annoys me when school computers flag up "organise" etc. in my essays as incorrectly spelt on Word!

This really P****! me off but in British English they accept both, mainly its just the "ou" being just "o" e.g. "colour" and "color" and "favour" being favor (Google Chrome uses American English so marks the ou wrong )

The way they pronounce T's in words.

For stew, we say Styew, they say Stoo.

Anyone else find it irritating when people say "period" at the end of a sentence?

    Re: Americanisms!
Sorry to burst your bubble but the American speech system is in fact the 'most proper', as it is highly derivative of the English we used to speak here in England many centuries ago.

But I have to say that their constant need to shorten every word is annoying, even if it is short anyway. One America tried to call me J, as my name is Jon, a shortening of Jonathon.

The way they organise the date, when the month goes first like 04/23/2011 rather than 12/04/2011

Isn't that an Americanism? Wouldn't we say international organisations also do this?
