    A level choice respectable?
I'm still not sure which A-levels to choose.
    So far I'm definitely choosing:
    English literature
    German
    Media...
And I'm stuck on either Law or Photography.
I've heard photography isn't too well respected but I love this kind of subject. Some people I've read have even said Law isn't respected for universities, I'm getting quite confused!
I think for a career I want to do broadcast journalism or something in Film/TV production so I'd want to do one of these someday at uni (thinking far ahead I know) as I know I want to eventually go to university. Do you think with these A-levels (my selected 3 and either photography or Law) I could get into a uni like Leeds?
    Many thanks

NO! Law is not a respected a level. Universities want good traditional subjects and law for a level is a recently new thing. Media and photography aren't that well respected either.

History or Philosophy would go so well with your subjects instead of Law and Photography; but if it's a question between Law and Photography, opt for Law.

I wouldn't recommend media law or photography. All three of them are seen as 'soft' subjects and may put you at a disadvantage.

Exactly what everyone else said, media/law/ photography will not get you into a good university, take subjects like english/history/philosophy/economics if you like essay based subjects

Thanks everyone. Does anyone know if economics is difficult does anyone do it?

Economics really isn't hard (though that may be more to do with the fact that I'm taking Edexcel than anything else). It's definitely more respected than media, law and photography, but if you're not interested in it then you may find it incredibly boring. You can pick up lots of easy marks in the exam by drawing diagrams and stuff, and the actual stuff you learn is simple enough, at least at AS. That said, I don't have much to compare it to, since my other subjects are all sciences...

Don't go for Media - too much coursework and it'll take over your life

I definitely will go for German and English literature, but as for media, won't I need it for a journalistic/film type course at a uni eventually? Economics is looking good for me but at my local college they only do it with business- whether that matters I don't know (would it still be a good subject?)

How about English Literature, German, Government and Politics and Media? Would that be better for a Russell group?

Have you looked at course requirements for russell group unis, if not i'd definitely recommend it and I dont think you need media to do journalism, unis prefer harder/more respected a levels that require lots of writing and essays etc

For a journalism degree, you don't need media. In fact to get into a journalism job, you don't need a journalism degree, you need to do a course by some acronym that escapes me right now - might be NCTJ or something like that.

Also, G&P isn't hugely respected, although is fine for a AS level. Perhaps something like History or Anthropology might be more your métier?

Look at the PDF file on this website: http://www.russellgroup.ac.uk/informed-choices.aspx
It shows A Levels that are well regarded by the Russell Group.

I'd say English Lit and German are well respected but G&P and Media aren't.

I would say instead of G&P do history and instead of Media maybe economics?

History is a very well respected subject and so is economics.

If you look at the Cambridge preferred subject list it should give you a good indication of what to take.

    Tier 1) Maths, sciences

Tier 2) History,Economics, Languages, Geography etc etc.

Thanks again everyone. Just checked on UCAS and for a journalism course at a uni you'd just need an English A-level and if I opted for film production you do need a media A-level :/ I don't really want to do media I love Geography but I worry If I do want to do a film production degree one day then I won't have the media A-level. But I think I'll hope for the best and do geography!

hey if you always want to do a film production degree and you don't want to do media A-level then you can always do a foundation degree before the film production degree like a BA (if that helps)

I too hope for a career in journalism - personally I took English Literature, History and Chemistry. I'd say that I really regret taking chemistry, another humanities subject would have been better...

photography isn't too respected in the world of journalism. Media isn't very well respected but if you are looking to study BROADCAST journalism then perhaps that could work. Law at A-level is apparently frowned upon..

Although I think a university like Leeds would accept german, english, media and (law or photography) because it does have mix of traditional subjects (english and german)
