Virgil and the world of the hero OCR F390 (11/06/12)
Anybody else taking this paper tomorrow?
What are you thinking may come up? Seeing as heroism has come up two years running and women and gods have also had questions I'm thinking something on either fate, structure (kill me...), the morality of war (would be a godsend!) or possibly pietas/furor (although it seems unlikely they'd have a 50 marker devoted to them).
Thoughts?

Family would be brilliant because you could so easily bring in pietas and the gods (with divine/mortal relationships)! Plus it hasn't come up in any contexts or essays yet (June'10 was Dido, B6, Turnus and Hektor, heroism and gods and June'11 was Juno, fate and Jupiter, war at Troy, women and heroism) What do you mean by morals?
Any tips for the context questions? I always seem to struggle with the 25 markers and do fine on the broader essays :/

Re: Virgil and the world of the hero OCR F390 (11/06/12)Fingers crossed for family then. Morals as in morals communicated via the texts eg duty. Uhh using specific book numbers brings up your knowledge mark and just make sure it is well structured(Original post by linney)

Which epic is more effective in conveying the sorrow of the war at Troy? was the one I was talking about, so hopefully it won't come up again.
Did you do the Roman Britain paper? -
Re: Virgil and the world of the hero OCR F390 (11/06/12)
Really nervous for tomorrow's exam. Hopefully something nice will come up

Moral messages essay would be really nice or something about the importance of family.
For a context, Book 7/8 hasn't come up so they might choose to do something about that and the portrayal of war within the Aeneid. Book 4 could come up with something about the consistency of Dido's portrayal - that would be a nice questions.
Hopefully something on fate, Venus, Aeneas' character or piety won't come up!!!
Good luck people

You guys are getting me really nervous about this morals thing! Can you give me some examples? We haven't covered this!(Original post by CC26)

And for context books 7/8 there isn't really that much you can really say for those and I imagine if they did pick passages out of those books it would be something on the nature of destiny (Aeneas landing in Rome/the Lavinia hair dream) or heroism (Turnus' maybe?)

Re: Virgil and the world of the hero OCR F390 (11/06/12)
Morals would be great as you could also contrast Hector and Achilles, the former having morals whereas the latter - not so much so, for obvious reasons!
Family.. Could really go into depth for that one too! Though I think I'm worrying more about knowing events in specific detail. I've been going through mark schemes and the fact that there was a book 6 question where you pretty much were required to recite the names of the punished etc to get more marks makes me concerned... -.- -
I seriously hope there isn't a question comparing the intricacies of the differing shields of Achilles/Aeneas. I know them vaguely but not in any significant depth...
This is probably a stupid question but for the 50 marker is one exclusively for the Aeneid and one for comparison? Or would you bring the Illiad into both?
And in terms of moral messages/morality, are you guys talking about Aeneas' piety (and therefore his duty to fam/city/gods) and what we take from that?

Re: Virgil and the world of the hero OCR F390 (11/06/12)
for moral messages, i would talk about how you should do something for your homeland because of your patriotism and not for greed. women should assume a domestic role within the household, those who do not lead honourable lives are punished (Book 6), family values - Aeneas is rewarded for his piety, peace is the way forward as Virgil heavily condems war through N+E, Lausus etc

Re: Virgil and the world of the hero OCR F390 (11/06/12)
I thought it was quite kind, YES loved the role model questions- how did you conclude- I basically said yes he was because one of the purposes of the Aeneid was to preserve in text the 'ideal Roman'- Aeneas... and did you have any bad points- I put sometimes he is weak....
-
lovely paper! I argued he's not a 'perfect' role model because despite his observance of pietas which is worthy of emulating, his frequent and concerning lapses into furor means he acts as a warning about the immorality of warfare/bloodshed of Rome, rather than a model!

Re: Virgil and the world of the hero OCR F390 (11/06/12)
Pretty good paper, wasn't too keen on the Turnus question because I didn't revise his character very well, but the role-model essay was AMAZING<3 loved it soo much - i said that the good things Aeneas does far outweighs the bad, and it's better to have an imperfect role-model so that he seems more human and the aspiration to be like him is more attainable that way

Re: Virgil and the world of the hero OCR F390 (11/06/12)
Well...
I put he was a perfect role model, because after all his most defining characteristic is his piety, and I also went into depth, on the opposing side about how he isn't because of his relationship with Dido, wearing Carthaginian clothin and helping them build the city that becomes their enemies during the Punic Wars. However I also argued that this served to show that he is an even greater role model as he managed to break away from her after prompting from the gods and compared him to Marc Antony who couldn't with Cleopatra therefore the contrast shows him to be a better Roman than even Antony. The furor point is a really good one though, wouldn't have had time to put it down though even if I wanted to..(body of my essay not conclusion!)Last edited by Twilight_Star; 11-06-2012 at 18:56. -
Re: Virgil and the world of the hero OCR F390 (11/06/12)
i loved the Aeneas essay, i talked about how the romans perceived there Heroes and gave the example of Augustus with the shield. The one with the 4 virtues on; courage, clemency, justice and pietas and linked quotes with what Aeneas did to each of these 4 and how he didnt show Clemency by killing Turnus. I also wrote about 10 pages overall, does that sound about right?

Oh ****...you guys all wrote the opposite of me! We were taught that one of Virgils themes was presenting the immorality of Rome's bloody conquests and therefore Aeneas' furor at Troy (the whole 'frenzy and anger drove me on') and in Italy were hallmarks of Virgil trying to warn Augustus! I'm really concerned that I've done it wrong now...especially because I also argued (albeit briefly) about the sympathetic portrays of Dido and Turnus reinforcing our judgement of the furor of Aeneas...woops. At least I did both sides and said his pietas (particularly father/son stuff) was worth emulating!
For the Turnus questions what did you guys pick up on? I commented on the repetition of the fire imagery/might of the Gods/caesura/ironies in the passage = Virgil being successfully vivid and for the second part I argued that Turnus is a victim, like Dido, of Aeneas' fate/flippancy of the Gods/bloodiness of Rome and his 'savagery' was only a reflection of the Roman perception of heroism (I.E Aeneas') as he is more of a homeric hero.
Phew that was long! Although my exam itself wasn't long...only managed about 9 pages! How did you manage 17?!
