Current Year 12 Hopeful Medics
I know it's a bit early, but the key to getting into medicine (or so I am told) is preparation
and planning ahead...so here's a thread waaay ahead of its time! I just saw the vet med
2014 one, and thought "Why not?"
Anyway, I am 16, and I am hoping to get into medicine in any of my uni choices, if they
would take me
but my favoured would be Cambridge. I am gonna apply to Nottingham,
Cambridge, King's and UCL...still not 100% yet, since I have yet to visit two of these:L
In any case, I'll be studying Chem, Bio, Physics/Maths (haven't decided yet) and Religious
Studies. Now commence discussions!
P.S. Do any of you have any back-up plans? And what work experience do you have planned/have done already? -
Re: 2014 Medicine ApplicantsSorry I'm not a 2014 medicine applicant but just had to say those are the exact Unis I applied to for medicine xD And yeah early preparation is a good idea for medicine(Original post by SmileAway)
I am gonna apply to Nottingham, Cambridge, King's and UCL.

What are your predicted GCSEs?

Re: 2014 Medicine ApplicantsSo are you an applicant for this year? Oh exciting, if you are!(Original post by zhang599)

Re: 2014 Medicine ApplicantsWell applied last September :P Firmed UCL(Original post by SmileAway)
So are you an applicant for this year? Oh exciting, if you are!
And not at all bitter about Cambridge... ¬¬ lol :P And if you achieve those 10A* 1A then congrats! Also A level physics is pretty darn hard in my opinion, I would chose maths instead
As for backup plans, I didn't have one :P Although people usually have either bio-med as their 5th choice or they just plan on reapplying if they don't get in that year. -
Re: 2014 Medicine ApplicantsHaha...I love Cambridge and all, but I am realistic. I am already prepared for the failure/rejection e-mail that will be received by me, in two years time. Yeah, work experience is what I am trying to work on at the moment...since I only have 1 week in a GPs:/ Are you studying medicine? Or applying to medicine?(Original post by -Simon-)
Good, get useful work experience and remember after your BMAT things might take rather a drastic turn. Don't get too set on Cambridge if you want to do Medicine, be open to other places.
Best of luck.
And thanks! -
Re: 2014 Medicine ApplicantsOh my, well done! You should be so proud that you even got into medicine!(Original post by zhang599)

I just enjoy physics more, but now I am not so sure since physics can get pretty complicated:L What A-levels did you do?
Yeah, Cambridge for me is that option where if I get in...I'll go crazy, if I don't its to be expected but still disappointing.(by that I mean, I'll probably cry.) Anyway, can you use all five choices for medicine? Or are you forced to give up one of them for another course? -
Re: 2014 Medicine Applicantshaha Thanks(Original post by SmileAway)
Oh my, well done! You should be so proud that you even got into medicine!
I'm happy with UCL and got rejected by cambridge, if both accepted me then I would of had to make a tough choice :/ My word of advice for Cambridge is that they focus on AS UMS, my feedback was that my interviews went well but unfortunately I didn't get 97% in my AS chemistry so got rejected :P There course is also very academic, one of my friends is studying medicine at Cambridge (he's just finished 2nd year) and he's had to write at least 1 essay a week and also he's only had about 2 days of patient contact in the 2 years he's been studying so bear that in mind :P
You can only apply to 4 medical schools, you 5th choice must be another course or you can just leave it blank
I would say apply somewhere where you like the course, like the area and you have a chance of getting in :P
I got 7As at AS (Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Maths, Computing, General Studies, Chinese) and I'm doing Biology, Chemistry, Maths, General Studies, Physics at A2
Yeah physics is tough...well it is for me anyway, I'd do maths any day but I just think that's cause I suck at physics :P

97%?! Seriously, what is wrong with them? Oh yeah, it's Cambridge, they can afford to be picky
Thanks for the advice on Cambridge, I'll keep it in mind. Wow, you got pretty amazing results, and you did so many subjects at AS...in any case, well done for getting into UCL!

Re: 2014 Medicine ApplicantsAwwww, I don't think it's too early, at all. This is about around the same time that the "Current Year 12's Hopeful Medics" thread for 2013 was started last year.(Original post by SmileAway)

Re: 2014 Medicine ApplicantsHaha...thank you! I know I am just so excited to start A-levels, since they lead to hopefully medicine(Original post by Jemine1)

First comes the 5 exams I have left and the dreaded exam day though...August 23rd:/ What A-levels are you doing? and how are they going?

Biology, Chemistry, Psychology and Maths. They're not easy, but the hard work pays off
The best thing I can really say is, a great of my good friends who were getting A*s at GCSE are failing A-levels. One of the biggest mistakes they made was expecting the jump to be like the year 9-GCSE hurdle. I really don't want to scare you, but prepare for one of the biggest educational jumps you'll ever have, imo. When the teacher says read something, you really should go and read that. When the teachers say prepare early, you might think they're just over exaggerating the situation, but trust me, you should be preparing early.
Imagine that you've already started uni because a lot of A-level content is a bit like early degree work. (Not 100% sure of this, but speaking to uni students who've done the same subjects, they've said the same thing )
Stay calm and work hard
I do' -
Re: 2014 Medicine ApplicantsMy sister does pharmacy (2nd year), she says her first year was about 100 times harder than A-levels or anything they could have prepared her for. So I take comfort in the fact there is still room for it to be harder than whatever we do in A-levels...not a good logic, I know, but it works for me(Original post by Jemine1)

Also, I know people who got A/A*s in GCSE and are now getting Us and Es...that worries me
I might read some of the syllabus this summer, just to start learning ahead of time

*checks calendar*...
... just wow...
I swear the 2013 thread only got created in January!
Either way... best of luck in your pursuit and should you have any questions regarding UCL/London, feel free to ask me.
First 2013 thread was from June. This thread's been created almost to the day of that one.
Time goes too fast!
but my favoured would be Cambridge. I am gonna apply to Nottingham,
