    University Choices - 2013 entry
    Good evening everyone!

I'm hoping to apply to university this coming September to do a History degree. The only issue is that I have absolutely no idea of the sorts of places I should be looking at!

    At GCSE, I achieved: 9As, 3Bs, a C, a BTEC Pass and a BTEC Distinction.

I'm currently taking AS levels in:

English Language and Literature (AQA Spec B) - Currently predicted an A
History (Edexcel) - Currently predicted an A/B
    Biology (OCR) - Currently predicted a B/C
Media Studies (WJEC) - Currently predicted a B/C

I'm intending to continue with English, History and Biology at A2 level.

I have transport issues, which means I'm limited to universities within a 150 mile radius at maximum, which gives me the choice of:

    QMUL (360 points)
    Southampton (AAB)
    Essex (ABB-BBB)
    Sussex (AAB)
    Roehampton (300 points)
    Winchester (300-340 points)
    SOAS (AAB)
    Kent (ABB)
UCL (A*AA-ABB depending on if I go for straight History or SEESS History)
    RHUL (AAB)
    Reading (AAB)
    Oxford (AAA)
    KCL (A*AA)
    Brunel (BBB)
    Cambridge (A*AA)
    Portsmouth (240-300 points)
    Oxford Brookes (BBB)

I was wondering if someone could give me any opinions on what places could be realistic, any information about the unis, what sort of range I should go for in my choices etc etc...

Huge thanks in advance to anyone who can help an overly confused girl out!

year 12 people unecessarily worry too much, grade predictions at year 12 are bull****. whatever happens you could re-sit anything in jan so long as you convince your teachers to predict you high grades in sept (which they will if your AS results are sound) and that your ps is good. in this case, you look like you could apply to anywhere to be perfectly honest. i understand you're concerned right now, but really you shouldn't; enjoy your summer and enjoy year 13 too (quality revision. not pressurised revision)

I will admit, whilst not the advise I was expecting on this thread, I very much appreciate your honest opinion on this

It's not so much trying to unnecessarily worry, it's more trying to work out what open days I could look at, what sort of places I could look at, because I don't really see the point in visiting and getting my hopes up about one particular place, just to find out that it's completely unrealistic, but I definitely understand what you're saying and I appreciate it

    Hi

I have been looking at university's myself with roughly the same grades but im looking at a politics course.

I went to oxford brookes open day and thought it was good it has a nice feel and is rather modern with bbc grades.

I then went to brunel, big mistake they have just upped the entry criteria to AAB from BBB. also it is rather old fashioned and with 66% international students it wont be on my list

I go to college in Winchester and the uni doesn't have a good reputation around here apart from teaching. Portsmouth is suppose to be good but has lower entry.

have you looked at uwe going to open day in a few weeks but has really good reputation and looks really nice. 340 points but dont know where you live may be to far. oh and hertforshire is suppose to be good for history.

sorry this is a bit mumbo jumbo

I just go to college near it and its at the top of a hill away from the town and we all joke about going there. but the reputation is good for different courses and bad for others. like the humanities.

what. do you even know what your on about.
Now im not trying to be biased as i'll be studying a humanities course.
But please explain to me where that logic comes from?
or is it just because of the pain in the arse hill... which i agree with.

I think the best thing to do is to look at the course at all of those places and to order prospectuses from them/look online. See what you think of the place, accommodation, course content, finance etc, then once you have your results you'll know roughly how high you can aim in terms of offer grades and be able to narrow it down a bit
For range in choices, it's best to have one lower offer university in mind that you'd be able to have as an insurance. Some people go for universities with the same sort of grades, others go for a mix - I applied to AAA/AAB/ABB/BBB universities so had a range! It's quite nice to have that reassurance of a lower offer there when you get to A2 and have had a bad paper
Out of the ones you've listed, I've only visited Essex (it's my insurance), and I loved it! Everyone seemed really friendly and there was a great atmosphere there, and contrary to what a lot of people say, I thought the campus was lovely! It's just one of those places that has a good vibe
Obviously it's all down to personal opinion, but I've not heard much bad about any of those, and know loads of people have applied to some of them and loved them like I said, once you have your results, narrow it down a bit, and choose a few to visit before making final decisions. Visiting can really sway your decisions about places!
    good luck
