Why so much hate for Bowland?
I applied for my accommodation a few days ago, and put Bowland down as my first choice. Albeit mainly because the rent for an en suite is relatively cheap. I thought it looked alright, but i've had a look on here, and a lot of people think it's quite skanky
Is it really that bad?!

Re: Why so much hate for Bowland?
I went for Cartmel for the en suite and the fancy new buildings, then I got a boyfriend in Bowland and spent a lot of time at his place - I wish I'd applied there in the first place! It's cheap, it's clean enough, and it's guaranteed to be pretty close to wherever your class is taking place which is what you want when you have 9am's in winter!!

Re: Why so much hate for Bowland?
I've been having the same doubts FFS! I put Bowland as my first choice, because of the location, the fact that it is the oldest and I will be sharing a kitchen with a lot more people for the room type I chose and all of a sudden I come across all this hate
i reeeeeeeally hope it's not as bad as people seem to think it is

Re: Why so much hate for Bowland? What should you do to be pranked like that? What did the victim on that video do to deserve that?(Original post by PlopNofear)
One guys I know made this video which was filmed in Bowland en suite I think. It looks relatively new and basically the same as my room in Furness en suite.

Re: Why so much hate for Bowland?
Basic reason: Inter-college banter.
Every college will look for a reason to put down every other college. In Bowland's case, it's the accommodation. I spent a summer in Bowland basic once, and it was grotty even compared to Pendle Ghetto (where the kitchens haven't been serviced since 1980, and every bathroom has a resident fungus species found nowhere else on Earth). Graffiti, limescale, non-functional kitchen appliances, etc... But in real world terms, no, it's nowhere near as bad as people make out - just not quite as nice as other colleges, and that's enough to make people look down on it. The newer en-suite stuff is even downright lovely. -

Re: Why so much hate for Bowland?Bowland was the last college to be updated and so got a reputation for being old and outdated, nothing more than that really.(Original post by louiseyoung)

Re: Why so much hate for Bowland? It's Bowland Standard. They just have a sink and a set of bathrooms further down the hall. It's still pretty nice - I was expecting it to be grotty but it really wasn't.(Original post by PlopNofear)

Re: Why so much hate for Bowland?
Bowland is epic because no one cares. You can do whatever you want, play loud music, smoke weed, have orgies, jizz in the corridor etc without people getting all anal about it. Completely different to Cartmel/Lonsdale. Depends on your personality. People in Bowland are more fun I have found, and this is coming from a Cartmelian.

Re: Why so much hate for Bowland?
Bowland has several different types of accommodation which isn't very clear given what everyone has said. There is Bowland main, a good chunk of which has been moved over to staff offices now but this is the most basic accommodation with 8 sharing a kitchen and bathrooms. However this is also cheap and with large bedrooms plus it had a very recent refurbishment, so is still decent. It has Bowland Hall which is 4 rooms per kitchen and is en-suite. It has Bowland Annexe which is like Bowland main but probably not refurbished recently. This usually has a really brilliant atmosphere. It also has Slaidburn House sometimes which is nice en suite and Bowland North which is pretty nice but again similar to Bowland Main. So Bowland in effect has a lot of variety with reasonably priced accommodation. The assistant deans in Bowland are really great so if someone causes trouble they will sort it out. So, there is love and hate for all colleges; don't believe everything you read.
And in case you're going for Pendle accommodation, the earliest accommodation was actually built in the mid-90s and has been refurbished several times. The most recent was built in the late noughties. Most on-campus accommodation, no matter how old, is actually in a really decent condition.
Wherever you are you'll have a brill time! -
