Do you want to live past 70
i just did one of those tests to see how long your life expectancy is. I know this is a very rough estimate but my average(over 50% likely) said i would live to be around over 70 without accidents etc.. This got me thinking...I don't really want to live past 70.
I understand that may sound ignorant as i just turned 20. and im not trying to offend anyone but ive seen the lives of 70+ year olds and it doesnt appeal to me, also lacking the energy to do the things i want when i want and frequent hospital visits just sound depressing.Am i the only person who just maybe would prefer to die a little sooner. -
Re: Do you want to live past 70
I want to see how the future turns out :3 (probably cr*p...but I can be optimistic.)
Not to mention, there's all sorts of medical advances going on which hopefully mean we'll be able to live life a bit more actively in our old age
all sorts of sticky ethical and philosophical implications, but let's not go there right now!!
There's a quote from a top medical researcher at Oxford or Cambridge, can't rememebr which, who said that he thought that the first person who will live to 1000, or something, is almost certainly alive today. Food for thought...Last edited by Todd; 11-06-2012 at 16:09. -
Re: Do you want to live past 70
I have many older relatives and they all seem absolutely miserable. My great aunt for example, her husband died years ago, she lives in a big house all on her own that she can't clean, she's always ill, she's so small and frail, she can't walk properly, she's had two strokes and forgets who people are and what's going on, she forgets to eat and her children hardly spend any time with her. She's in her late 80s. I would not want to be like that. She seems so depressed...

no one knows when there going to die, God can take you any time he wants!
I want to live until I'm not healthy anymore. I'll be taking a trip to Switzerland at the first sign of chronic illness. -
Re: Do you want to live past 70
Chances are you're going to be unhealthy/ill for a little while before you die, regardless of what age you go. If you die past the age of 70, then it's likely you will have stayed healthy and had more of a chance to enjoy your life than those who die before that age. Also, despite how boring old people's lives may look from a young person's perspective, old people are actually happier in general than most normal adults, so it can't be that bad

Re: Do you want to live past 70This is more my kind of thinking. I don't think "Once I hit 70 life will be ****" if I'm still loving life, healthy and got energy at 70+ I want to be alive and enjoying it. But, personally, I do NOT want to be ill and unable to do anything/look after myself. Not only will I be miserable but I'll be a burden to everyone else in my family!(Original post by Old School)

this video shows that as long as you keep fit, you can enjoy life even in your twilight years

Re: Do you want to live past 70Exactly. I'd be happy to live past 70 so long as I was still loving life, lifting etc.(Original post by fidelity_blue)

Equally I'd want to die at 25 if I was struck down with some ****ty illness. -
Re: Do you want to live past 70You've seen what the western diet and sedentariness results in at age 70... not what a healthy 70 year old is like (hint, healthy 70 year olds are in better physical condition than the majority of people your age in the western world, and they're certainly not lacking energy)(Original post by kaymagic91)

Re: Do you want to live past 70
Contrary to popular belief you can still be very fit at that age. Look at the Rolling Stones for example. Mick Jagger will be 70 next year and he is incredibly fit, while his performances remain the most energetic non-choreographed ones I have ever seen. Charlie Watts, their Drummer, is now 71 and to play drums for hours so tirelessly is no mean feat, even for someone half his age. You know how they do this? By eating healthily and regular exercise. Mick himself does 12km runs on most days in addition to yoga, kickboxing, weight lifting and other stuff whilst abstaining from alcohol and drugs. He is practically a fitness fanatic. You can achieve great results at his age with a lot less effort though.

Re: Do you want to live past 70
I want to live so long as I have reasonable mobility- I don't need to be in the gym but able to do more day to day things without hassle -and mentally together. I think I could be fine with loosing mobility since I can take it as a time in life to learn endlessly.
I have no comparable life expectancy for men in my family because everyone who has died has died too young due to crap lifestyle. But my great gran was past 85 and both my grans are now past 75 and still healthy and with it. So I guess I have decent odds since I am better educated about health and plan to actively take care of my body when I don't think any of my relatives ever have reallyLast edited by BKS; 11-06-2012 at 16:50. -
Re: Do you want to live past 70
A lot of old people's quality of life is poor because of illness and afflictions of old age, such as immobility and joint problems and falls, poor balance, which in general can be avoided by keeping your muscle mass, remaining mobile and strong, lifting, and getting enough cardio and eating healthily.
tl;dr if you want to be happy, coordinated and mobile in old age, you need to lift weights. Pretty sure squats can actually cure cancer too. -
