Don't know what to do... :(
I applied to Brookes and got given a condition of BBC, I've now just had a diabolical English Exam and now I'm not going to meet that. I've done all my student finance and accommodation and was there providing exams went well but now I know they won't accept me. Originally they asked for BBB and I applied with BBC to which they gave me an interview and lowered it to BBC, they wouldn't lower it anymore, surely?!

And now I probably won't get into my insurance either as they had the same requirements (BBB) but were just a lot more lenient and even if I do, I won't be in halls because I hadn't specified anything and they'd just have slotted me in wherever, probably 2 miles from my lectures in the middle of London.

What can I do? Is it likely I'd get into my uni with lower than they specified even after my interview? What're the chances of getting into halls or at the least somewhere close by if you go through clearing?

Sorry if this seems aggressive or irrational I just feel like utter **** after that exam and like 2 years work has done nothing. ****.

Firstly, take a deep breath or two and try to calm down. Immediately after an exam isn't always the best time to assess how you've done in it, and you may well not have done anywhere near as badly as you think. English is a subjective subject. All may not be lost.

I think it's probably not likely that they will lower your offer further still, but before you give in to despair, remember that others have taken the same exam as you and may have fared no better, in which case they will still need to fill their course and you may be lucky. As for accommodation, if the university is in Clearing, it's because they haven't filled their quota for the course, which means they probably haven't got enough students to fill their halls of residence, so once again, you may be lucky. Don't believe the worst until you're told to. And if the worst comes to the worst and you get somewhere further out than you'd like, the place will still be full of other students, (possibly all feeling the same way!) and you'll be able to have a social life just the same. Don't rush to meet trouble more than half way if you can.

First of all, it's important that you calm down and don't make any rash decisions. Not saying you would, but I know someone that got their firm to reject them during an 'I'd rather jump before I'm pushed' phase and regretted it the next morning, it took a lot of effort to get it reversed.

You don't know you've failed. It sounds cliche and naive, but it is hard to tell sometimes. I could have sworn I failed an exam once - I was preparing to do the retake and everything - and it came back that I got 76%, joint highest in the class. So stop feeling like **** and wait until you get the results to start beating yourself up.

That said, you do need to consider an alternative game plan, and in fact you might feel better once you have a net in place. On that note...

    1. It is very hard to predict whether a university will accept you with lower grades. It depends on a lot of factors that you can't control, including how many people meet the offer, how well you compare with other misses, whether the university value loyalty or grades more, how competitive Clearing would be for the course... Unfortunately, it comes down to the best we can say is they might accept you, but they equally might not.

    2. Again, whether you get into halls or not depends on a few things, such as how many of their firm holders failed and now aren't taking their places, whether a waiting list existed before you showed up and what the university's accommodation policy is. The good news is, it's relatively easy to find accommodation in London, so you'll likely still be close by.

    3. Have you given any thought to a Clearing strategy, if you're also concerned you'll miss your insurance?

Thanks for the replies, it probably was irrational but at the same time, I know everyones going to have relief after their finals (mine being tomorrow) but I just know I'll still be on edge until I know what uni I'm going to and where I'm staying. I'm a worrier through and through

Not at all. How does it work?/Is there somewhere that is a good source of information to save you the typing troubles. Surely halls/living close by is going to be the same as with my insurance? Because it's not all sorted out like it is with my firm I probably won't get in?

I don't think you'll be the only person who is on edge and worrying. But do try to put it out of your mind, especially because you still have an exam to focus on, and enjoy your summer - there really is nothing you can do about it now.

TSR has a lot of Clearing advice, plus there will likely be threads about results day 2012 closer to the time. The Wiki guides can be found here and here; the second link includes a section on what I was about to say, which is you may feel calmer if you come up with a plan on what courses you're looking for at what universities, so you can get going nice and quickly because the research is done beforehand.

The accommodation situation is likely to be the same as if you go to your insurance, yes.

N'aw, thanks I read it in a crazy stress induced state last night, but not I've actually done the exam I probably should have re-read it. But thank-you anyway.

Ah great! Yeah, I like to have things planned, backed up and set in stone so I'll probably look into clearing and get some sort of plan sorted. You guys have been wonderfully helpful, I can only say thank-you again.

Try to stay positive - you may have done much better than you think in your exam. Even if you do miss your offer it isn't the end of the world - 'Clearing' is really good and there is also 'Extra' too.
