Islam is a religion of equality....

But having lived in Saudi Arabia (the birthplace of Islam), this does not seem to be the case.

At the top you have the local rich Saudis who get the top jobs, then arabs from other countries, then whites, then east europeans.

At the bottom you have asians such as bangladeshis, pakistanis, afghans, kurds, malaysians and indonesians followed by the blacks. These people never get the top jobs, they are officially discriminated in the job market and are not considered real muslims by the average Saudi. So many horror stories about how they are beaten and mistreated...

So is Islam really a religion of equality?

So your basing the concept of racial equality in Islam on the actions of what you saw from a bunch of ignorant Arabs who say they are Muslim?

I agree Saudi Arabia is like that but that doesn't mean it is allowed.

The national news papers have standardised job classifieds with references by employers, seeking candidates who are e.g " Western Educated", "Arab Educated", ... to denote the employers' racial preference in a candidate. Candidates of different national / ethnic origins are offered different pay and employment contracts based on their ethnic origin

"Western Educated" doesn't refer to racial preference at all, it just means educated to the standards of how they do it the Western world meaning having attended a school either in Europe, etc or going to an International school. Never heard of "Arab educated".

But either way racial preference is wrong, and Islam is against racism strongly............as said in the final sermon of the prophet "All mankind is from Adam and Eve, an Arab has no superiority over a non-Arab nor a non-Arab has any superiority over an Arab; also a white has no superiority over a black nor a black has any superiority over a white – except by piety and good action. Learn that every Muslim is a brother to every Muslim and that the Muslims constitute one brotherhood. Nothing shall be legitimate to a Muslim which belongs to a fellow Muslim unless it was given freely and willingly. "

Or it could simply be a reflection of the fact that the standard of education in the West and the richer Arab countries is far better than in somewhere like Indonesia or Bangladesh. A lot of wealthy people in poor countries send their children away to be educated in Europe because they know it'll give them the best opportunities in life.

This has got nothing to do with Islaam. It is purely ignorance, arrogance and pride on the Arabs part. During the last Islamic empire(Caliphate) there was an overwhelming sense of brotherhood and equality throughout muslim lands. Ever since the birth of nationalism in the middle east due to the west, racism and inequality has plaqued the entire middle east. IF the caliphate returns I can assure you that this problem would be rooted out in no time..

There is racism everywhere, including Saudi Arabia.

But if you mean Islam, the religion, there is no such concept of a racial heirarchy.

Some sects of Islam have the idea that Arabs have some "nobility" because Muhammad was an Arab prophet.

That seems very odd... considering that slavery based on race was legal in Saudi Arabia until the 1960's.....

Saudi Arabia is not a synonym for Islam.

And I do not know if that claim is true or not, and do not have time to verify, so I'll have to take your word for it.

OP, why on earth are you using the Saudis as some sort of mirror reflection or standard that represents fully the values that are taught in Islam? Don't look at the Saudis but rather what Islam (drawing from Qur'an and Hadith) has to say about the issue of racial hierarchy. Just have a look at Prophet Muhammad's (pbuh) last sermon where he said:

"All mankind is from Adam and Eve, an Arab has no superiority over a non-Arab nor a non-Arab has any superiority over an Arab; also a white has no superiority over black nor a black has any superiority over white except by piety and good action."

Now I am certainly not defending what the Saudis do, I wish they'd stop. However, to assert that there is a racial hierarchy in Islam just because racism is evident in Saudi Arabia is pathetic and weak. How do you explain the sheer number of people from Afro-Carribean backgrounds who converted to Islam?- Malcolm X and Muhammad Ali to name but 2. Do you really think that they would enter into a religion that had a racial hierachy despite the fact that their whole life it was this very racial hierarchy in American society that they were trying to fight. It was the fact that Islam taught racial equality that led so many people to Islam and that is the fact- no matter which 'Muslim' Country decides to act otherwise.

Are you kidding me? The muslim world, pre Ottoman Empire, so that's inluding the Arab gulf, was the biggest slave trader in local history, its not just Black Africans either, Eastern Europeans, Slavics, and Oriental/Mogol peoples aswell.

This is ironic. It's becoming more and more acceptable to hate Arabs and people don't even think twice about it. Please check yourself.

Gulf Arabs have always looked down upon others, especially before Islam. Islam tried to eradicate that.

BTW from the Prophet's last sermon:

All mankind is from Adam and Eve, an Arab has no superiority over a non-Arab nor a non-Arab has any superiority over an Arab; also a white has no superiority over black nor a black has any superiority over white except by piety and good action. Learn that every Muslim is a brother to every Muslim and that the Muslims constitute one brotherhood. Nothing shall be legitimate to a Muslim which belongs to a fellow Muslim unless it was given freely and willingly. Do not, therefore, do injustice to yourselves.

So it's a fact that islam had slavery based on race for most of its history i.e the last 1400 years.

The Saudis conquered other people, made them adopt arab culture and put them in their racial hirarchy where the asians and africans were at the bottom. Sounds very contradictive to say islam is equality when it clearly has not been the case for the last 1400 years.

The Saudis are clearly the richest in the hirarchy while the economically poor asians and africans never get the top jobs in their society.
