Re: Changing GCSE options...I almost suspected trolling(Original post by Hayer)
I dont know whether to take textiles or french, although the rest of my options are sorted. Which would be seen as being better?
French of course is way more respectable than textiles. Languages are loved by unis and employers and you'll regret not doing it for the rest of your life

Thank you. Sorry about it being in the wrong forum. Only just signed up
I see what you're saying but if I do French i wont have any arty subjects and then I might not be the 'well rounded' type of person uni's want...
You can be well rounded without arty subjects.. in fact the language will certainly help you to be more well-rounded than textiles :O
Just have some hobbies - play an instrument, join societies and clubs, play sports etc. develop interests - your GCSE choices are largely irrelevant as long as you have what is needed to do the A-levels you want, and that they're not ridiculously dossy. -
Re: Changing GCSE options...
Do you know what kind of subjects you want to go in to at a-level or even a career you would like to persue?
Also, which do you prefer? I was in this exam same position 2 years ago, and ending up picking French, which in some ways i'm glad of, and some I regret. I really enjoyed both, and was going to take both, but i was the only one in the year who picked both, so I would of ended up being the only person in one of the lessons. I'm glad I picked French, as i've ended up really enjoying it and even thought about taking it at A-level, but I regret it as I really enjoy Textiles, but remember it is the kind of subject that you can persue as a hobby if it is not one that is needed for what you want to do in the future.
Hope this helps, and good luck picking you options! -
Re: Changing GCSE options...
Why are people putting pressure on the OP? I personally think your GCSEs should be about finding your strengths and weaknesses - I could have definitely chose my GCSE options better, but if I didn't make the mistakes then I would have no idea what kind of subjects I like.
The majority of my French class at GCSE chose the subject because they were told it would look good on their applications to university and so on. But, they actually hated the subject and struggled really bad. French is a lot of hard work, and if you really want to think four years ahead of your time, then yes it could be seen as more impressive than textiles, but that will probably have very little impact. I loved French, and I'm so glad that I chose it. I didn't do textiles, but I did do product design which I'm told is fairly similar. Having a technology lesson was such a relief and it was nice to have a coursework based lesson as opposed an exam one. They were both enjoyable in my opinion, but everyone is different. -

I will probably do biology and chemistry plus others at a level because i'm thinking of doing medicine. I might just take french but ive chosen all my other options already and im taking german too and im unsure about how difficult it will be to take two languages and whether I will be clever enough to do both

Re: Changing GCSE options...
depends why you want to take them really - I see GCSE as the time to sort of realise where your strengths are, and starting to give direction to which academic/job route to go down in. I really liked acting before Year 9, but now as I'm finishing my GCSEs, I've realised that I'm better at History, and I'm not keen on drama anymore
Basically I'm saying take what you want, don't worry which one will look better. Especially as you're doing German anway, don't feel like it's best to take French (although if you do want to, go for it)
Although on that note, if you want to do a particular AS level, make sure you pick the GCSEs required to take it.
Hope this has helped, I didn't read this properly tbh so sorry if I said something obvious

I'm sure you'll do great, doing two languages can sometimes make them easier, as a lot of the rules used are the same. I know some people will hate me for saying this because apparently unis don't care about GCSEs, but Birmingham does as it is one of the best in the country for that course, but if you wanted to go to Birmingham uni to study medicine, than the two languages at a decent grade would give you an advantage as it shows you are taking at risk in some ways and also shows you as being a more way rounded person.(Original post by Hayer)
Thanks

Personally, taking French, I feel has given me an advantage at A-level as it has allowed me to get in to one of the best schools in the country for sixth form, over others from my school who had also applied!
Good luck with the decision making!

Re: Changing GCSE options...Yes, I see what you mean and ive heard you need really good results to go to birmingham too. I also live near it so might consider going there when im older.. I still have a bit of time to make my final decision. Thanks though(Original post by KatnissEverdeen)
