Super Deal : New Chevrolet Spark 1.0 Plus only £5995
OK, I know this is not to everyones taste but a new car with 5 yrs warranty, 5 years breakdown cover and 5 years service can't be that bad. ( As a student, an amazing deal)

    Fuel:Petrol
    Gearbox:Manual
    Bodystylemall MPV
    Doors:5
    Colour:Various
    Engine CC:995
    BHP:67
    0-60 MPH:15.5 secs
    CO2:119 g/km (Band C)
    Fuel Efficiency:55.4 mpg (combined)
    Pence Per Mile:12p
    Road Tax:£0

Salesmen states: "The Spark offer is with 5 years warranty only, but we do offer 3 years servicing plan and 3 years AA cover for only £349."

Looks good but if its the most basic model its gonna be fairly ****, probably no central locking, no electric windows, no air con etc.

For 6k you can get a good supermini with all those easily with full service history under 25k miles, probably like a Corsa or something.

For that sort of money, you could get a car many times better than that in the used car market. That car would be cheap to run, with 55mpg and free road tax, but I can't imagine it being great to drive with 67bhp and a 15 sec 0-60 time. Although the RRP is nearly £9000, and it doesn't really have a bad level of equipment. Still, you could get something quite good used for that price.

That kind of money you can buy something better... and I say this despite my parents running a GM dealership.

I bought new on the basis that everything is paid up front for 3 years and guaranteed for 5. If you have capital it's not always bad to buy new because there are no nasty surprises, and it's the monthly cash-flow the surprises hit which is what you lack as a student. Used cars are a huge liability and repairs can, if you're very unlucky, eat up your saving very quickly. If you like the car then go for it- I get huge peace of mind knowing I'm not liable for anything that goes wrong with my car.

That said, if you have any mechanical skills or know anyone with them, you'll save a ton in the used market. I just lack those skillsets, ha.

It's also worth noting that a car like this will be extremely cheap to run and insure. I have a Hyundai i10 bought new and it practically runs on air, and is super cheap to insure. City cars are all you need as a student- it's very well buying bigger, faster cars second hand for the same price but again, it soon becomes equally expensive once you insure, tax, buy petrol, maintain etc...

Lol :/ its a nice way to buy a brand new super outdated technology car.... I always wonder when someone is driving a crap car 'what was going through the original buyers mind to have bought that piece of junk instead of a decent second hand car' sorry.... Oh and same goes for silly colour choices lol.

Funny, I've run 30+ year old cars for 10 years now. I bet I've spent less in maintainence than you would loose in depriciation on a new econo-box!

Looks like 15.5% standard APR, so make that price nearer £8,000 for your average student

That's tripe! There's so many examples of people buying new cars and they're constantly going back to dealers for warranty repairs and dealers shirking on their warranty duties, by either saying it's not covered or denying there's even a problem in the first place!

My family have always bought new and never had a problem.. all my friends who have bought used have been hammered for costs. We've never paid for a repair yet..!

Then your friends need to stop buying sheds, and actually check the car before buying it.

A properly serviced and cared for used car can be perfectly reliable.

..which is why I said that if you know what you're looking at, you're better off buying used. Read my first post.

I didn't deny that, and I wasn't referring to your first post. You're assuming I'm saying things that I'm not. My point is that you shouldn't use a few horror stories of your friend's used cars causing them hassle as a reason that people shouldn't buy used.

To quote you exactly, you said this

What I'm saying is that that's not a fair comparison to promote, as it's simply not representative of the majority of used car purchases. And before you say it again, I know what you put in your first post, but that's not what I'm referring to here.

You can never tell when a part would wear off, it is a used car after all. Some parts do just die a sudden death regardless of how well a vehicle had been maintained.

If it is a manufacturer's warranty there are hardly any reasons a dealer would turn away a bonafide and genuine case, warranty works are extremely profitable for a dealership.
