Anyone else still to hand their notice in?
I'm guessing a good few of us 'mature' students will be quitting full time jobs soon.

Got to admit, I am really nervous about handing mine in.

The company may try and chase me for money, as they have just funded me through a HNC on the promise that I stay for 2 years more (I signed some home made looking document too, but it certainly didn't look legally binding). The company is also facing real recruitment problems, simply can't get the right people for the job and me leaving will make the team even weaker.

Then there is the month notice period, I plan to hand my notice in at the end of July and leave at the end of August. I'm hoping to keep it quiet that I'm leaving but I know the inevitable 'Why are you leaving?' 'Uni is a waste of time!' comments will be fired at me daily by the many people I come into contact with daily.

Then there are the people that have trained me up to technician level over the past 4 years, I am letting them down too, they will feel as if they wasted their time on me no doubt.

Finally there is my most recent boss, only been in the role 8 months but has been really good to me. Sorted out some overtime claim problems promptly last month and has generally just been really good to work for so far while other people seem to have problems with him. We just seem to get along, that won't happen when I have to tell him the news.

Unfortunately even a casual email can be legally binding. I would be very surprised if the document you have signed has not been reviewed by legal, if for no other reason than to ensure the company is not doing something illegal.

Whether they press their claim is another matter.

I served my full 3 months notice, my resignation also contained the request for a UCAS reference.

I think you are anticipating the most likely response and you may get some initial destablisation attempts, I have certainly experienced attempts at destabilisation when resigning to take up another job, although there was nothing like that this time except they said that it was accepted but I could withdraw it for upto a month, afterwhich they will have advised the client and be too far down succession. I did not consider withdrawal for even one picosecond

The response from my colleagues was more along the lines of "you lucky barsteward" "I would love to do that".

I'm still debating starting a access course due to the fear of leaving my full time job, this to me is going to feel like I'm losing all stability and comfort in my life. I suppose it's just a case of being strong and just doing it or spending your life wondering how it would of changed you.....
Anyways best of luck and I hope all goes well for you

I'm just finishing an Access course I began last September. I remember the day I handed my resignation in with fondness.

I already have a degree in IT, worked in IT for over ten years but last year I came to realize that I didn't really want to be doing the long, unsociable hours for the rest of my life. I left to pursue a career in radiography and I'm starting Uni inSeptember.

Most people congratulated and encouraged me, although I did feel bad about leaving at a sensitive time whilst we were going through team changes and I had most of the experience of the current team. My boss offered me part time work but I just know I would have ended up doing just as many hours.

I'll admit it hasn't been easy, especially financially, but I would do it again if it came to it.

All I can say is Go For It - it's far better to try it and it not work out, than not do anything and regret it.
