    Enthalpy of formation: is it for gaseous compounds?
    When calculating enthalpy formation (using a Hess cycle involving: enthalpy atomisation, average bond enthalpy) does it only apply to the formation of gaseous compounds?

    Formation of 1 mol of any compound.

    Standard state of the reagents. i.e. water is liquid. If it specifically states that the water is a gas, you need to include an enthalpy of vaporisation term.
