Firstly I have no idea what is a 'Highly abnormal liver function' is, but i understand how you feel.

About two years ago I had to a make the biggest decision of my life whether I had to go to exams for my future or choose whether to have an operation. I weighed out my pros and cons for my situation and asked for advice from my family and friends. No matter who I asked the answer was always somewhat the same: "Health comes first.", "What matters in a long run?" etc, etc.

In the end, I choose to go to do my operation because the doctors told me my condition had gone worse and I could risk the rest of my life either not being able to walk or be confined to a wheelchair/crutches and constantly in pain. My condition was so bad that not only did it started to effect my walking and breathing it was slowly crushing my organs.

But the point is... What is the point of suffering or being constantly in pain just to study for an exam? You can always catch up to your future anyway if you put the effort in to work hard. I took a gap year and trust me it is a worthwhile decision for me anyway.

You should ask yourself what is more important or value to you?

*Oh yeah I had scoliosis if you wanted to know and I had a whole spinal correction operation done and I can walk.

    I second this!!

    -------

Having done a lot of my AS's in and out of hospital, it is possible to do exams whilst being an inpatient!! I got AAB in my AS exams and I was almightly ill at the time!!

You need to contact your exam officer at school/ college and they are legally obliged to help you, e.g. get an exam invigilator to you in hospital You also need to contact your uni choices

    Good luck!!

Thank you - it's good to hear from others who've been through the same thing. And glad you're both better now anyway!

Hi, Please don't worry too much. Make sure you have a hard copy of appointments you've had with the doc, and phone the universitys whats going on, and try and get a doc to put it in writing. Also, alert your school!

Your health does come first, you don't want to risk it for a shot at uni right? And if the worst does happen, you can always defer/reapply. The uni's should be understanding because this is hardly your fault. Oh and also you can take exams in hospital.

    Hey

I can COMPLETELY empathise with you. I became really ill over my AS exams, ended up being dragged up the doctors by my mum and within a few hours I was in hospital, on all sorts of drips awaiting surgery (appendicitis). And all the while, at about 12:30 I was determined to discharge my self and get to my exam that started at half one. Good job I didn't, I had a temperature of 40+ degrees and my appendix would've probably perforated in my exam (n). As hard as it is, health has to come first; I know it doesn't make it any better. I missed 7 exams and i'm still left catching up now, as well as doubting fulfilling my university offer.

In my situation, I was given a set of grades so surely it would be the same for you? I suggest you phone up the universities and ask them what you can do, as well as the exam boards and ask them whether you can be awarded your predicted grades (normally happens as A2!)

I really hope things work out x

Talk to your doctor and see what he suggests but I recommend going into hospital if he says to its one year out which could benefit you in years to come best to get it sorted now as it could get worse and then you may not be able to go to uni anyway.

I wish you all the best and good luck let us know what you decide

Hello, thanks for your reply. I'm sort of starting to realise that health does have to come first - although that majorly sucks.

I didn't think exam boards awarded predicted grades for A2s? Just because your uni place depends on it so it wouldn't really be fair? I'm just going to speak to college/uni directly and hope they can help somehow!

Thanks for replying. Do you know how taking exams in hospital works? Does someone from college have to invigilate or something?

Yeah, I think they do it regularly! It was rare for them to do it for my AS's because I had the opportunity to retake them. They base them on the grades you've previously achieved as well as your predicted grades

Re: Hospital and exams - what the hell do i do????
Firstly, you must obviously have the treatment. Secondly, get a letter from your doctor and get it to the exams officer at your school. They will explain the process from then on. All schools have to submit (seemingly endless) lists of estimated grades to exam boards ahead of the exams. In the event of a student being unable to sit the exam, the usual procedure is for the estimated grade to be awarded to the candidate, after the school's other candidates whose estimated grades were on either side of the sick person's grades have been moderated to see that the school's estimate is a reasonable one. There may be circumstances in which an exam can be sat in hospital, and in this case the school will sort out the invigilator etc, but it doesn't happen often. (I once invigilated an exam in someone's home, stopping the clock every time they dashed to the toilet. A three hour paper ended up as a five hour one.) The important thing is not to worry about anything other than getting the treatment. Exams officers will sort the rest out for you after you have informed them and given them the doctor's note. Good luck.

I'm not really sure what I'm hoping to hear right now but none of my friends are snwering their phones or my mum and I'm home alone and I'm in a total messs

I've just got a call from my doctor saying that this on-going health problem I've got is not getting better and it needs to be fixed etc etc but he wants to get me in as an in-patient, asap

my A2 exams are starting on Friday for 2 weeks! He said he knows they're important but my health needs to come first

I really don't know what to do. I've requested special consideration but can only get like 3-4% max. The way this is going I've got no hope of getting in to university.

Will universitys even consider this? I can't even contemplate messing up my whole future, it's a total nightmare

'Highly abnormal liver function'. I don't even know what it means and they don't know what's causing it or anything.

Hi - I was in the same situation as you last year. I missed 80% of my classes, due to chronic liver and gut disease. Luckily I had support from friends and family, I did manage to sit my exams, and came out ok. But afterwards, I was totally beat and ended up in hospital for quite a long time. People are right, your health has to come first. I took this year off and am now going to uni starting September. If I'd done this in the first place maybe I'd have recovered quicker, the stress really didn't help.

You have to realise that exams and uni aren't the end of the world right now, even though they feel like it. You can always resit, and go to uni next year if need be. I had a friend who had tonsilitis through her last exams also, and because she'd sat a certain percentage of her course already, she was given a grade anyway, and went to uni. I'm not sure how this worked though so perhaps sit down with your head of year and discuss your options ok?

Best of luck, you will be alright. xx

I know somebody that got seriously sick a couple of weeks ago and it looked like he wasn't going to be doing his exams: he arranged with the school for them to provide evidence that he would have achieved his predicted grades and they were going to give him those should he be too sick, as it is I just saw him in my History exam today, that's determination for you !

Re: Hospital and exams - what the hell do i do????
as others have said is there no way that you can
    1) go to hospital but just go to school for the times where you have exams and then return to the hospital and revise etc there?
    2) you may be able to take your exams in the hospital - my bro has a friend who did that for his january exams as he has leukaemia
    3) as others have said.. they are exams, and you can do them another time if necessary. your health IS more important as it sounds quite a serious problem that you have. however it may be worth talking ti the doctor about if you can do your exams before going into hospital i.e. is your condition so dangerous that you should really be sitting in a hospital bed and not at home?
    4) try talking to your school etc again. there must be some alternative as im sure loads of people must get ill when taking exams.. even if its just the flu or something else minor. i seem to remember something about getting your predicted or an average grade for exams. but i may be making that up, but worth enquiring about all your options.

Go into to hospital and talk to the exams office at your college there might be more they can do for you then you think. If your not required to stay in you could pop out and maybe sit them? not trust me im not an expert, but go to hospital and tell your college.

I'm sorry, I really don't know. Your school will probably be able to tell you. Best of luck with your exams and that everything gets sorted and I hope you get better!

I don't know if this will work for you. But it is sometimes possible to sit your exams in a single room as an inpatient. this would need to be organised by both the hospital ward and your school.

    Just food for thought.

An invigilator is sent to hospital with your paper and sits in the room with you whilst you do it You will be offered breaks at certain intervals during your paper
