    Quick Q on Civil Eng
    What is Civil Engineering?
And how much maths and science does it actually involve?

Re: Quick Q on Civil Eng
Lets be honest, thats a massive question :P but I shall do my best!!
Civil Engineering concerns designing and building the things that make civilised life civilised, such as roads, railways, sewers, buildings which dont fall over etc. I think it is the best discipline of engineering to study A) you design/build the fundamentals of life B) your projects are usually BIG and impressive and C) because it teaches you how to manage people which you can use in basically any profession. However the mechanical and electrical engineers may disagree with me there...
There will be a lot of maths involved because its how engineers explain and manipulate the physical world in order to engineer their solutions. A degree in any engineering discipline will contain lots of maths so make sure you have good skills in this. Physics is probably the most relevant science because of the materials and mechanics involved however this will be taught at a higher level at university so only a few places have it mandatory. Maths will almost certainly be a requirement so make sure you take it/are taking it for A level!
For more information look at the "little book of civilisation" found on the ICE (Institution of Civil Engineers) website.
I hope this helps a bit.... are you thinking about applying for it? Good luck if you are!

    aww thanks love
Im thinking of it but i don't know.
Because, well don't be judgmental or anything but i really messed up my first year of AS and I dont know what field i want to go into so i was thinking of filling my summer vacation with different types of work experience, ect and one of the fields i got into was civil engineering. It sounds very interesting, but some people really degrade it by calling it the 'boring' engineering degree.
Im also thinking of retaking the year :s ... not happy at all how this year turned out to be honest.
Also im studying the likes of English history geography and maths at a level- what do you think of this if I were to go down the civil engineering route? And Im totally rubbish at science, just passed at gcse
Thanks for you response in advance

I just commented on annother thread regarding that, I diddn't take the full on maths science route either and it didn't harm me (5/5 offers)! I can't see how its the "boring" engineering either, google it on images and have your mind blown by what Civil Engineers can do! I think they are jealous of the fact we have a great job allowing worldwide travel and high employment, rather than being stuck in an office or factory each week...
ASs are haaard so dont worry about that, it does take a lot of getting used to. and if you feel you need to retake dont try and hide it, show you learnt from it and are capable of taking a hit in your stride!
are you male or female btw? I am male so just wanted to check the "thanks love" comment was coming from a girl not a guy.... but if you are a guy thats fine you can still call me love if you want I just wont reciprocate... :P

Lool yeah I just commented on it just literally now
What Unis did you apply to? dont tell me your the typical oxbridge, imperial TSR applicant, but then again if you had oxbridge you wouldnt of declined it :P
Yeah I know, I love the fact they can do that it seems so amazing- lool we going down the jelousy route are we :P
Yeah, thats what everyone says about retakes. Its best to show you have learnt from it
lool yes im female- and i presumed you were male so dw...eww imagine if i was guy now that would have been awkward
how many females do civil engineering? i presume there a minority

    Haha then Love is fine!
What is your name btw, So I have something to call you, love or dear seems patronising addressing a girl...
In answer to the other thread (makes sense to keep it all on here?) I am about to finish year 13 (2 weeks!!) and I applied to Bath, Bristol, Nottingham, Southampton and Surrey... so not your typical 20A*s and Cambridge TSRer. What about you? is that your sort of aspirational universities or are you aiming higher? Yeah, females are in the minority in Engineering, but the difference is decreasing year on year so I wouldn't let that put you off. What other professions are you experiencing this summer? It Sounds very interesting

Re: Quick Q on Civil Eng
Pretty hard to explain what civil engineering is, so I won't even try... There's a fair bit of maths, it's the way engineers use to describe and quantify stuff, but it's not impossibly complicated. Similar stuff with science - physics is the most relevant, but it's not academic physics in any real sense of the word. It's much more like mechanics, so if you enjoy those modules, you'll probably enjoy engineering.
