Choosing a laptop for uni
Hi,
I was wondering if anyone has used an ultrabook at uni?
I'm considering the Asus Zenbook Prime UX31A, and I'm assuming its spec will be able to handle everything required for Business Management, and most likely more?
My main question is aimed at more techie people, and whether they think that it will last me for 4 years. Because of its size, I'm worried it may slow down over-time or I may experience problems but as ultrabooks are new, I'm guessing no one really knows?
Just looking for some advice... -
Re: Choosing a laptop for uni
Although after Googling the laptop you mentioned and realising that it does look very sexy, I would definitely recommend a Macbook. I bought one a couple of months ago and I absolutely adore it. They have a reputation of lasting a long time, rarely get viruses, can do pretty much anything on them etc. You can also get a 15% student discount on them if you get an NUS card, which ends up being £150 off as it's a £1000 laptop

Why do you need a laptop?Last edited by Iqbal007; 12-06-2012 at 22:04. -
Re: Choosing a laptop for uniAlthough I've not tried to connect a printer to mine yet...what issues are there? I do have Microsoft Office 2011 for Mac and it's not that bad. Although it looks a bit different to the Office 2010 for PC, it has pretty much all the same features and is just as easy to use!(Original post by E.Cook)
I have my issues with Macs because of the printer issues, greater draw to thieves and the specialist software (Mac for Word is also worse)...
Can't advise I'm afraid, but wanted to put in my two cents on Macs ...
Also, the magic trackpad is the best invention in the world! I love it and now struggle to use a normal trackpad because I'm used to doing all the special finger commands
Basically, I adore my Macbook Pro! -
Re: Choosing a laptop for uniAbsolutely. It incenses me that people are just recommending products based on their personal preferences, when we don't actually know anything about the OP's actual requirements.(Original post by Iqbal007)

Yes, Simone739 and Caitykinss, I'm looking at you both, here. -
Re: Choosing a laptop for uniI must admit the trackpad is good.. but it hates printers with a passion.. It refuses to remain connected, and with my printer is refuses to allow it through the firewall in set up... it's just all round unintuitive..(Original post by Caitykinss)

And Office Mac is so much more fiddly, the toolbox annoys me the screen is hard to utilise to maximum efficiency.. -
Re: Choosing a laptop for uniBasically highlighting that your recommendation is based purely on anecdotal evidence and has about as much logic and reason behind it as your apparent membership of the Church of St. Jobs.(Original post by Caitykinss)

Let's wait and see what the OP needs, before recommending something that doesn't fit the bill, shall we? -
Re: Choosing a laptop for uni
To start off with, I'm not getting a Macbook. They really aren't the best laptop out there.
Most people buy them for the 'brand' and for the price that they are, you can get a much better Windows laptop. I could go on, but thats just my 2 cents..
I need a laptop for:
(you cant do bullet points here?)
Large Word documents
Website developing/ designing - I am aware a large screen helps but I'll use an external monitor for this.
I guess some gaming though I'm not sure as I'm not a fan of computer gaming (prefer games like Fifa on the PS3).
Running quite a few applications (software) at the same time
Anything else that I may need to do at Uni I guess.
Image editing - potentially video editing too
And I want it to be portable.
My main concern with ultrabooks is reliability. If they aren't reliable or won't last me 4 years then I'll probably go for a 15" HP Envy/ Pavillion.
I'm starting to waffle! but my main question I guess is would the Asus last me for 4 years at uni?
Thanks for your very quick replies!Last edited by c_faulds; 12-06-2012 at 22:07. -

I'll have to consider that when I get a printer to take to uni with me in September. (At the moment I email stuff to my mum's PC to print out) I'll do some Googling to see if any work well!(Original post by E.Cook)

MacBook and the printer issue can be solved by a wireless printer/USB link

From what I can tell, you need an i5 minimum with a dedicated graphics card at least a GT530 and higher. With at least 6gb of ram. -
Re: Choosing a laptop for uniThat's way too much loooool(Original post by c_faulds)
Erm I don't really have a budget but nothing ridiculously expensive. I'd say £1500? but I could push it a bit more if its worth it.
Do you have any laptops in mind that I could get?
Thanks for your help!
Well for the best speed on image editing you'll definitely can get an i7 with 8gb ram and the a good graphics card.

nter?sb=:000000F0:000002AF:&smid =DB26997D637FA7BE9B3612042952C69 D
Customised it to have a :
GT630
8GB DDR3 1600MHZ
500gb harddrive
The better battery
That's about £1200, but you get the latest i7 which will help you and the GT630 should be more than enough to play fifa at good settings.
Or you could go for other alternatives like this
http://www.ebuyer.com/342262-acer-as...p-nx-rznek-001
Acer Aspire 5710G Laptop
- Intel Core i7 3610Q 2.3GHz
- 8GB RAM + 500GB HDD
- 15.6" HD + Webcam
- NVIDIA GF GT640M
- Windows 7 Home Premium 64
£800
Though I would be careful as some users have reported overheating issues in the last range of laptops.
or
Lenovo IdeaPad Z570 i7-2670QM 8GB 750GB GT540M 1GB BluRay 15.6 W7HP
http://www.dabs.com/products/lenovo-...54600000&src=3
£719
or
Asus N55SL-S2019V Core i7-2670M 6GB 750GB NVIDIA GT635+2G Blu-ray 15.6" W7HP
http://www.dabs.com/products/asus-n5...54600000&src=3
£805
or
http://www.novatech.co.uk/laptop/ran...ckedition.html
Novatech nSpire 2760 - Black Edition - 15.6" Intel i7 2760 Mobile Processor - 8GB DDR3 Memory - 500GB Hybrid SSD Hard Drive - DVD Writer - NVIDIA GT 555M Graphics £770 with OS
But that's if you need them straight away, otherwise I would wait a few weeks, so that all the laptops are updated with the Ivybridge cores. -
Re: Choosing a laptop for uniWell looking at the specs:(Original post by c_faulds)
Wow! thanks!
Yeah I can wait a few weeks, so I guess I'll wait for the new processors.
Is the ASUS Zenbook Prime UX31A more than what I need? Or are these just cheaper alternatives?
Thanks again for your help
CPU: Third-generation Intel Core i7
Operating System: MS Windows 7 Home Premium (64-bit)
RAM: 4GB
Hard Drive Size: 256GB
Hard Drive Type: SSD Drive
Display Size: 13.1
Native Resolution: 1920x1080
Graphics Card: Intel HD Graphics 4000
And than comparing it to your needs, I would be worried about the ram and graphics card particular. But not sure how much storage you would need and whether 256gb is enough.
By the way my choices aren't ultrabooik, standard laptop, but you do get a lot for specs.

I just like Macs.
