Re: New Macbook Pro announced
I'm in the new market for a new laptop but I can't decide on whether to get the 13" air or 13" pro now that they are the same price, I rarely use a cd drive. Also I've never owned a mac whats the transition from using windows since forever and swiitching to OS X?
P.S I don't want replies saying buy a PC blah blah blah -
Re: New Macbook Pro announcedThis(Original post by Gofre)
To take the Pros at their name, for professional users it's not a massive issue. The users that will get the most out of the retina display, aka video and image editing, will not be reliant on optical drives, and vice versa. If one does need an optical drive on a regular basis, there's still the "old school" Pro lineup. The new Pro was designed to epitomise Apple's image for the future, where everything revolves around flash storage and digital distribution of content in a compact form factor. There's obviously going to be people this does not suit, even for price alone, but it's the direction most areas of the market are heading in anyway.

Re: New Macbook Pro announcedWhy? A Macbook serves a great purpose, to those who actually need it.(Original post by Existentialistic)
Wow, people who buy Macbooks must really be clueless about computers...
Occasionally you get the odd ****, you buys it for its looks alone. That's fine, let them waste their money (personal preference at the end of the day). -
Re: New Macbook Pro announcedUnless the standard user is web browsing and running a physics simulation at the same time, they won't notice the extra ram or i7 vs an i5.(Original post by Feefifofum)
Yeah, but the standard user will be doing more than just web browsing at any one time. Like I said, the difference wouldn't be enough to make someone buy it just for that, unless they needed the extra power, but that's not to say that you wouldn't notice it from time to time. -

Legitimate reasons. Nice.
P.s. Legitimate reasons? Too many to list. -

So in other words you need to be a photo/video/music/IT enthusiast or professional to warrant the benefits of a Mac.
Don't even try me bro, I use linux when I need to do programming so I know all the pros & cons and there is a lot of bull**** flying around out there. Just listen to how many times the word "beautiful" was used in the conference and that shows that there is a major problem with how Macs are presented yeah -

Re: New Macbook Pro announcedThis.(Original post by Mr Smurf)
Its not a broken analogy. Cars do the job of getting you from A to B. Just like how a Macbook will do the same job as a normal laptop. You say that you shouldnt overpay for a Macbook unless you are a photographer? Then that means you shouldnt overpay for a car unless you are going to race with it. Plus Macbooks do feel "smoother" for alot of people and it isnt 60% since the laptop you linked is £650 and people here use their student discounts. -
Re: New Macbook Pro announcedPro - higher spec, better performance, faster, etc. Air - slimmer, lighter, much more portable. Depends what you want really. If it's going to be your only computer then I'd go for the Pro. If you're not going to be using CDs/DVDs/games etc and not going to be doing much that needs significant power, then you could consider the Air.(Original post by AgentSushi)

Switching PC to Mac is really, really easy. Takes up to a week before it's second nature. There are videos on the Apple website to show you the basics, but it isn't difficult

I fail to see any reason why you wouldn't do this. "I like the logo" is not a valid reason. -

a) OS X is a much nicer interface than any linux desktop environment. Unity is junk and GNOME has been moving in the wrong direction for a while imo. OS X gives you all the power of a unix environment, combined with a great user interface.
b) Apple hardware is usually nicer than their competitors. I dont mean the raw processor/GPU power, I mean the stuff that actually matters when youre using it. The trackpad + keyboard on an Air/Pro are flawless, while PC manufacturers continue to ship 'high-end' laptops with cheap spongy keyboards and tiny trackpads. Since these are the two things you use most when youre at your computer, this matters a lot.
c) Multitouch trackpad gestures are amazing, and once youve used them for a month you wont be able to go back. Yeah, you can get some PC laptops that have multitouch but they arent as well-integrated with the operating system like they are on OS X, and the trackpads usually arent big enough to make the most of them. Most PC laptops still have separate buttons for left and right click; once youve used a mac, this will be intolerable, as will not being able to scroll pages by swiping up/down.
d) They just look so much cooler and are more fun to use. Those alienware things look ugly, the 14" one weighs 3kg+, the trackpad is tiny, the keyboard doesnt look great, and the battery life is worse than a macbook (not that youre going to be carrying a 3kg laptop around much anyway). If you want to play a lot of games I can understand why you'd prefer it to a mac, but for everything else I know what I'd take.Last edited by poohat; 14-06-2012 at 10:13. -
Re: New Macbook Pro announcedIf you go with the Pro then make sure you get the SSD drive, it makes such a huge difference.(Original post by AgentSushi)

Apart from that they are pretty similar, I have a 13" Air and definitely wouldnt trade it for a Pro because I love the form factor. But I dont think there's much point to the 13" Pro in general - the only real differences are that the Pro has a slightly faster CPU (but both have the same graphics card and this will be the bottleneck), the Pro has a bigger harddrive as standard (but you really want to swap it for an SSD), and the Pro has a DVD drive, which might be useful if you often watch movies when travelling. If youre going for the Pro I'd be tempted to get the (non-retina) 15" version, especially since it comes with a proper graphics card. Its £400 more expensive than the 13" Air though so I wouldnt bother personally, but it depends what you want to use it for.Last edited by poohat; 14-06-2012 at 10:30. -
Re: New Macbook Pro announced(Original post by Feefifofum)
Well they may have made changes to that too - we'll have to wait until they are released and tested by people other than Apple themselves.
Personally I'm not convinced by the lack of superdrive. For a lot of MBP owners it's their only computer, so having to buy a separate CD/DVD drive is ridiculous :/
I think that within 5-6 years or so, there'll be no need for Pros to be as chunky as they are (compared to Airs, that is... They are still pretty thin!) so they'll probably ONLY have a Macbook Air line once they can get the right amount of power into the small space.(Original post by Feefifofum)
Well yeah they're easy to get hold of, but one of the selling points of the MBP has always been that it's the complete experience in one box. Now if you want to play DVDs etc you have to have a separate DVD drive cluttering up your desk.
Personal choice of course, but it's a change that I wouldn't have made, especially since it seems to have been sacrificed for weight (the old MBP is hardly heavy!) and thinness (the old MBP is thin enough already!) rather than performance.
It'll be interesting to see what they do with the Air range - the rumours that said that the new MBP was to have no superdrive also said that the two ranges were to be combined into one, with the Air eventually being phased out entirely.Haven't seen any Air announcements yet...
