Turn in the road - I suck at this...Hi there,
So i've been doing TIR for the past 2-3 lessons for a little segment of the lesson and I feel as if i'm horribly bad at it.
I get the concept, but get confused by the steering when i'm reversing..
Any tips for getting better at this?
Thanks -
Re: Turn in the road - I suck at this...
pretend you are the vehicle and you are crawling on your hands and knees
this works for many - the headlights are your eyes and the boot is your bum
the front wheels are your arms and the back wheels are your legs
Now do reversing etc by imagining you are the car or the car is you !! -
Re: Turn in the road - I suck at this...
Why are you confused?
When you start get as much of an angle as you can (safely) whilst heading for the direction you want to go.
Then as you reverse go to the complete opposite side by turning your wheel the complete opposite way.
Once you have gone back far enough then back to the original way you turned.
Why don't you get the steering? -

Full right lock, slight left turn when nearing the opposite pavement, start to reverse, full left lock, check mirror to see when you're nearing the kerb, slight right turn when you get close, start to go forward full right lock.
I'm a terrible driver but the turn in the road is pretty easy. -

Re: Turn in the road - I suck at this...
I find it easiest to remember to always look the way I'm steering. When you reverse with a left steer, look out the back passenger window, and then through the driver's front window when you are doing the right steer at the end.
Remember where you should be looking at each stage and you'll fix in your mind the steering and the observations without overthinking things.Last edited by Svenjamin; 13-06-2012 at 19:02. -
Re: Turn in the road - I suck at this...
Two things that helped me:
1. Get a toy car and practise with it. Sounds stupid, but for me it really helped to be able to *see* how the wheels were turning, how the back and front moved, etc.
2. Stop thinking about left and right: turn the wheel the way you want the car to go. I would always get confused with left and right cos I was facing the other way. -

Re: Turn in the road - I suck at this...Got the steering sorted and can do it now without being prompted.
Just gotta do it a bit faster than I already do as i'm still a little hesitant..
Thanks guys for the help, i'm now doing parallel parking.
