What is the best way to apply for Volunteer work / Work experience?
    Hi,

I am kind of scared now. I left it too late to apply for work experience as I pushed it out of my mind in order to focus on my summer exams. I am a year 12 and only have these summer holidays to get as much work experience as I can, plus the 3 weeks from now until the summer holiday starts.

I am wanting to apply for medicine. I realise that it may be too late to get any Care Home work experience, as a CRB check is needed which can take 8 weeks :/

So, if the above is correct, all I really can do now is work at a GP surgery or a Hospital. I am unsure of what the best way to contact them is. I was going to send letters out, but I am having second thoughts about that as its easy to just ignore a letter. I have included ALL my contact details on the letter, so would a GP at least call me back to say even if the answer was no?

EDIT* The reason I am so insistant on a letter is that I can send my CV too, which might kind of impress them more than just saying "Hi, I'd like some work experience"

I'm sort of in your position too. Well, I have one week in a hospital and some volunteering but I would really like to get some GP experience. I would still apply for some volunteering, despite the CRB taking 8 weeks because it might be quicker, in that case you can start it and be able to write it in your personal statement. Then by the time the interview comes, you'll have plenty to talk about

With regards to the letter or phoning, I can see the appeal of sending a letter and CV but I think you should call them up first to see if they take work experience students. If they do, then ask who you can send a CV to etc.

    Good luck this summer! x

hi, have you managed to find some work experience? how long are you planning to volunteer for? until uni starts?

I know that your local GP is unlikely take anyone on that lives in the area to promote patient confidentiality, but you could try sending letters out (or even ringing up) ones that are a few miles away. Though I doubt you'd get any really valuable experience but admin work, unless you specifically ask to get some experience of what it's like to be a doctor (i.e. job shadowing). You could also try local hospitals, or blood donation centres (and help in their kitchen cos they give snacks and drinks to donors while they're there).

Also, check the do-it.org.uk website, as that is the UK's database for volunteering opportunities (though these are only the ones that organisation bother posting).

Try looking for local charities and hospitals. Such as mental health services and charity shops. These places usually always take on volunteers as there are hardly any.

I've just started volunteering this month for a local 12 bedded hospice at a hospital who deliver end of life care. Although it isn't paid volunteer work is so rewarding, It's worth giving it a try.

I found this work by visiting the website and printing off an application form to be a volunteer after seeing them advertised on a banner. Try looking through your local papers to see if any charity or fundraising is being advertised.

Employers and university's also see volunteer work better than paid work. Especially if it relates to your career/subject choice.

    Hi,
I know that the summer holidays are nearly over and your heading back into your studies, but try looking into working/volunteering in local youth clubs; scouts, guides, rainbows stuff like that, it always looks good, the only issue is that they often only run in term time, so look now start in sept

If you know you want to go to uni try finding any job as this means that you want work towards something and learn new skills

I work in large supermarket ha and have volunteered for serval years in girl guiding and scouts. And have been on open days as asked whether its suitable for me to be on a nursing course and they said I could any volunteer work and paid work means your hard working

    Hope this helps
