3rd Year Abroad - Thread I
Hey everyone,
Just thought I'd throw a thread together where people can ask each other advice or give ideas for the year abroad. I have just finished my first year at Aberystwyth University and want to get on the bandwagon ASAP so I can plan my year abroad (which for me begins in August/September 2013). So whether you're going to Italy, Germany, France, Spain, Russia, Japan, China etc etc this is the place where we can share ideas and worries. Anything from initial first thoughts to the complicated things such as travel and accommodation can be spoken about here.
I, myself am studying French.
Bonne chance, and lets begin the discussion -
Re: 3rd Year Abroad - Thread I
Hi,
I'm going abroad the same year you do but I'm at Heriot-Watt and doing German and Spanish. Do you do 5 months for each language as well? I'm a bit confused about where we can apply to go to, whether it has to be a university abroad that is linked to the one we study at. Pretty nervous about it already! -
Re: 3rd Year Abroad - Thread I
Oh, good thread
I'll be going abroad in 2013 too, really can't wait!
I'm hoping to spend the summer in Russia, as my uni has links with Moscow State University for the Humanities. Then for September onwards, I'm torn between spending the whole year in Germany (my uni has links with two unis in Berlin, Frankfurt and Bremen) or half there and half in Vienna (beautiful but really expensive from what I've heard...). Also not sure whether I want to study for the whole year or spend one semester studying and do an internship.... So many decisions!
Anyone else planning on Germany? Also, if you have any questions about studying France (especially Paris) then shoot

Re: 3rd Year Abroad - Thread I
Im wanting to go to Canada, but medical and personal reasons are preventing me. PERSONAL - I am soooo scared of flying and MEDICAL - I am a Type 1 diabetic and will require medication for the rest of my life, and it is apparently sooooooooo expensive in areas that aren't a part of the EEC and particularly North America - though I'm guessing its more expensive in the US than Canada. Im now thinking about going to the French parts of Europe that I've NOT yet done. The West Coast & South Coast of France, Andorra, Switzerland, and southern Belgium. Still undecided as to whether work or uni though, even though I think work will look good on CV for what I want to do after uni.

Re: 3rd Year Abroad - Thread I
I'm going 2013 too. Probably Southern Spain & France. Thinking teaching assistant in Spain as I need some work experience and uni in France. Hope we get some decent help from the home Uni as it seems alot of stuff to sort, especially when going to more than one country.

Re: 3rd Year Abroad - Thread I
I'll be doing my year abroad in either France or Spain or both in 2015, and I'm actually not looking forward to it, I'm terrified! I'm very shy and I hate being in unfamiliar places on my own
I'm thinking of staying in Northern France so I can hop on the Eurostar home if I need to >.<

I'm going in 2013 too and am also studying French
I don't know much about it so far (assuming we'll start finding out when we go back) but I'm looking forward to it! I know I'll be terrified when the time comes, though. If there's anyone who's done a year in any other French-speaking country such as Belgium or Canada, I'd be interested to hear how it went
