What do you ACTUALLY do on the first few days of uni?
Discussion for current and prospective students about social life at university, societies, what stationery and bedroom items to buy and anything else relating to life as a university student.

What do you ACTUALLY do on the first few days of uni?
So you've arrived at your university, you've unpacked all your stuff into your new accommodation room, your parents have said goodbye and left (if they accompanied you), you've shut the door and you're sitting on your bed in silence.
WHAT ARE YOU MEANT TO DO?!
Guys I need some good ideas/advice. At this rate I'm going to be wondering around my room aimlessly, hairdrying chicken hanging from the ceiling like Howard out of Fresh Meat.Last edited by britchick; 13-06-2012 at 22:29. -
Re: What do you ACTUALLY do on the first few days of uni?
I want to break the ice and get to know the "neighbours" but I don't want to come across too keen/a weirdo.
Spoiler:ShowI asked my friends what they thought if I left my door open and invited others to come for tea and biscuits
and to get to know each other. They said I would be known as the freak from the very first day... Not exactly what I want if it can be helped.Last edited by britchick; 13-06-2012 at 21:50. -

A fantastic/desperate/downright old-fashioned/eccentric or possibly just nice weirdo! No one would truly know which....Last edited by Mr Einstein; 13-06-2012 at 21:55. -
Re: What do you ACTUALLY do on the first few days of uni?Exactly, get sorted then head for a communal area.(Original post by That Bearded Man)
I unpacked my bags in my room, sat in the living room and then waited for someone to pop in
I wont be living in halls but I will still be heading for the common room/union bar etc, need to show your face however daunting it might seem. -
Re: What do you ACTUALLY do on the first few days of uni?Judging by your username I can assume your time in Higher Education was relatively short-lived, so I'd possibly prefer advice from someone who actually remained at university. If I go ahead with my tea and biscuits idea I may possibly be you in one year.(Original post by College_Dropout)

Re: What do you ACTUALLY do on the first few days of uni?
I knew my flatmates from a group on Facebook, and another girl and I walked to Tesco to get food, got lost on the way.. amazing how quickly you bond with someone being lost in an unfamiliar area haha.
But whatever you do DON'T close your door and sit on your bed. It takes a lot of nerve to get back out there then, just say hi to everyone else as they're unpacking and just try to chat to as many people in your flat as possible :-). -
Re: What do you ACTUALLY do on the first few days of uni?
I've got my chicken doorstop in my Uni box so that I can keep my door open, I'm also going to make a little poster to go on the door with my name and what course I'm doing just so that people feel like they can come in
on the outside I'm really excited and I'm quite an extrovert so I'm hoping I won't be too in-your-face to people but inside I'm hoping they're all as nervous as me so we're all in the same boat

Re: What do you ACTUALLY do on the first few days of uni?Hahaha I actually love the poster idea, I would do it myself. But I'm not sure others would find it very cool/normal.(Original post by madders94)

Re: What do you ACTUALLY do on the first few days of uni?Aww. But I was gonna draw a picture of myself on it and everything so they don't confuse me for someone else(Original post by ice_man)
social suicide, right there.

Re: What do you ACTUALLY do on the first few days of uni?
I got to know some of my housemates through a facebook group ( turned out I had a mutual friend with a girl I was living with and we came from the same town) but everyone in the house met in the kitchen and then we went out in search of our neighbours and then we headed out!
I terms of what I actually did during the first week of uni, I didn't do a lot, just some administration stuff and some fairly boring introduction lectures with a bit of a hangover -
Re: What do you ACTUALLY do on the first few days of uni?If you apply this theory to everyone then apparently I'm a blue plant.(Original post by britchick)
