What do you ACTUALLY do on the first few days of uni?
So you've arrived at your university, you've unpacked all your stuff into your new accommodation room, your parents have said goodbye and left (if they accompanied you), you've shut the door and you're sitting on your bed in silence.
WHAT ARE YOU MEANT TO DO?!

Guys I need some good ideas/advice. At this rate I'm going to be wondering around my room aimlessly, hairdrying chicken hanging from the ceiling like Howard out of Fresh Meat.

I want to break the ice and get to know the "neighbours" but I don't want to come across too keen/a weirdo.

    Spoiler:

I asked my friends what they thought if I left my door open and invited others to come for tea and biscuits  and to get to know each other. They said I would be known as the freak from the very first day... Not exactly what I want if it can be helped.

    LOL

A fantastic/desperate/downright old-fashioned/eccentric or possibly just nice weirdo! No one would truly know which....

Exactly, get sorted then head for a communal area.
I wont be living in halls but I will still be heading for the common room/union bar etc, need to show your face however daunting it might seem.

Judging by your username I can assume your time in Higher Education was relatively short-lived, so I'd possibly prefer advice from someone who actually remained at university. If I go ahead with my tea and biscuits idea I may possibly be you in one year.

I knew my flatmates from a group on Facebook, and another girl and I walked to Tesco to get food, got lost on the way.. amazing how quickly you bond with someone being lost in an unfamiliar area haha.

But whatever you do DON'T close your door and sit on your bed. It takes a lot of nerve to get back out there then, just say hi to everyone else as they're unpacking and just try to chat to as many people in your flat as possible :-).

Mingle, remember pretty much everyone will be feeling exactly the same! ...unless they're a super confident extroverted socialite!

I plan on leaving my door open and meeting me flat mates/neighbours and then heading to a communal area.

I've got my chicken doorstop in my Uni box so that I can keep my door open, I'm also going to make a little poster to go on the door with my name and what course I'm doing just so that people feel like they can come in on the outside I'm really excited and I'm quite an extrovert so I'm hoping I won't be too in-your-face to people but inside I'm hoping they're all as nervous as me so we're all in the same boat

Hahaha I actually love the poster idea, I would do it myself. But I'm not sure others would find it very cool/normal.

Just chat and get to know people. Get settled in. Is it really that obscure?

I got to know some of my housemates through a facebook group ( turned out I had a mutual friend with a girl I was living with and we came from the same town) but everyone in the house met in the kitchen and then we went out in search of our neighbours and then we headed out!

I terms of what I actually did during the first week of uni, I didn't do a lot, just some administration stuff and some fairly boring introduction lectures with a bit of a hangover

If you apply this theory to everyone then apparently I'm a blue plant.
