What do you ACTUALLY do on the first few days of uni?
Discussion for current and prospective students about social life at university, societies, what stationery and bedroom items to buy and anything else relating to life as a university student.

Re: What do you ACTUALLY do on the first few days of uni?
I think this is going to be a huge test for me, since I don't drink at all because of my religious beliefs, and it seems everyones going to go out and get hammered.. I'll push the boundaries and go to a few clubs, which again is prohibited, but I will not drink.. I'm always up for some shisha though! I just hope theres a good mix of people from different races and stuff at my uni, or I don't think ill culturally fit in..
oh and stop being wimps and don't worry about any awkwardness, it will subside shortly after I guarentee it. Go with the flow, use your childhood friend making skills, its not even hard to make friends, everyone did it when they were 5 year old!
P.S - Avoid nerd talk, computers, gaming etc atleast on the first day, or you'll end up giving the impression that your a geek, and thats a no no.Last edited by icecoolwas; 19-06-2012 at 04:07. -

I've got my chicken doorstop in my Uni box so that I can keep my door open, I'm also going to make a little poster to go on the door with my name and what course I'm doing just so that people feel like they can come in
on the outside I'm really excited and I'm quite an extrovert so I'm hoping I won't be too in-your-face to people but inside I'm hoping they're all as nervous as me so we're all in the same boat

But you're welsh.

Re: What do you ACTUALLY do on the first few days of uni?I need to rate some other people before I give you any more positive rep, damnit!!!!!(Original post by britchick)
I have no idea. I wonder if they'll approve of this poster I'm thinking of putting up on my door the first day?

I particularly like how it says "Grownups write your child's name in the space above". But I'm going to do it, because...

Get there early, wedge your door open and keep it open every day for the first week or two and ensure you have beers.
On the first few days you doss about and go out and do freshers activities with your flat/corridor mates, go out and drink in the evenings and make friends :P
And be talkative, don't be afraid to initiate a convo with just hi, whats your name, where do you come from, what are you studying etc or continue the conversation to find out stuff about them. Everyone's in the same boat

Re: What do you ACTUALLY do on the first few days of uni?Plenty on Amazon(Original post by madders94)
They didn't have any sheep ones
but my bedroom is going to be sheep themed, I think. I toyed with dinosaurs but I don't think they've had any in Wales for the past 50 years and I want to have a modern look in there

Nice to see you're sticking to your stereotype

Be like Sheldon Cooper and draw up a 'Halls agreement' and get everyone to sign it.

Re: What do you ACTUALLY do on the first few days of uni?
First few days is just filled with free stuff being thrown at you from all angles, sleeping off the night before, introductory lectures and awkward conversations with people. You'll be so sick of "where are you from?" "what are you studying?" and "what did you do at alevel?" by the end of it, haha.

Re: What do you ACTUALLY do on the first few days of uni?If someone invited me over for tea and biscuits then they would be my new best friend.(Original post by britchick)
I want to break the ice and get to know the "neighbours" but I don't want to come across too keen/a weirdo.
Spoiler:ShowI asked my friends what they thought if I left my door open and invited others to come for tea and biscuits
and to get to know each other. They said I would be known as the freak from the very first day... Not exactly what I want if it can be helped.

Tea and biscuits? ;D(Original post by Negaduck)

I love tea and biscuits but when I get to uni, that'll definately be replaced with vodka shots and beers
Don't want people thinking I'm an old fart
