What do you ACTUALLY do on the first few days of uni?
Discussion for current and prospective students about social life at university, societies, what stationery and bedroom items to buy and anything else relating to life as a university student.

Re: What do you ACTUALLY do on the first few days of uni?hi(Original post by Batmonkey)
I'm already at the University of Leicester, hopefully going into my second year ( I find out on friday if I've passed but I'm pretty confident I have )
I'm going to be going to Leicester too next year (hopefully) and need advice. I'm going tobe living at home so wont be doing all the socialising in the halls and was wondering where and what can i do to meet new people and make friends
thanks -
Re: What do you ACTUALLY do on the first few days of uni?Me? Nope. Off to UEA. Sorry! I'll send an anonymous cake to UCL just for you.(Original post by FatCharlie)
I heard rumours about you starting at UCL this September?
Feels like there's a chance we might end up in the same halls, and if that happens, I will eat your cake. ALL OF IT. Just a little heads up. (ALL OF IT!)

You make me laugh.
I'll be sure to throw some cupcakes in your direction during boring lectures. I mean, seriously fascinating lectures, it's going to be so interesting all the time.

if there're more cake lovers doing Pharmacy with us, then your in for a real treat !

Re: What do you ACTUALLY do on the first few days of uni?Oh my bad! I thought I saw someone with a similar name in another thread today or yesterday mentioning they were going to attend the Pharmacy College or what's it called at UCL(Original post by aspirinpharmacist)

Re: What do you ACTUALLY do on the first few days of uni?
People earlier in the thread were talking about some halls that put flatmates in contact with each other over facebook. I haven't heard of them doing that in any of the threads about bristol accommodation but if they do I don't think I would take part. I am really looking forward to the excitement of just arriving and meeting people there. I think it would take away from the experience if it wasn't all new and completely unknown.
I just want it to be September now pretty much! -
Well we don't know which accommodation we get until after results day, so you'll have to wait(Original post by DonJuan)

Re: What do you ACTUALLY do on the first few days of uni?Don't be silly, everyone likes cake. Except people who are allergic to the ingredients. I can forgive them.(Original post by James A)

I'll spend all our lectures just targeting people with cupcakes.
Better work on my aim though.
So excited! -
Re: What do you ACTUALLY do on the first few days of uni?Haha, that's cool. Easily done.(Original post by FatCharlie)

I'm sure there are people willing to bake at UCL though.

Re: What do you ACTUALLY do on the first few days of uni?Yep. But then at least I get to come back after Christmas and force all my uni friends to come out and celebrate with me, as well as celebrating with my friends back home. Haha, it might work. Who knows?(Original post by desdemonata)
Ouch. I was worried about being 17 until the 10th of October. I feel your pain. Nice to know I'm not the only one, though!
I'll try to sneakily dilute everything, maybe it'll help
I've never been to Germany but that's exactly what friends of mine who went this year said. They didn't bring me any back!
And that was after they tried some of my hard-earned (okay, so my sister brought it over) Cadbury's choccy. Edit: which they adored. Grrr.
I love Germany. That's awful! I bought 10 huge bars of Milka to take for my friends back home, I got the best looks from the lady at the till, especially when I tried to explain why in very bad German.
And several bags of Haribo. You need me as a friend, I'd bring you stuff!

That's true, I don't remember any tangfastics. They did have a huge bucket of sour cherries though. Mmmm.

Re: What do you ACTUALLY do on the first few days of uni? They do at sheffield. At the beginning of the year, its 'Whos in flat A5???' By Christmas its more 'Who the hell is treating our flat like the bloody post office?' or 'Has anyone got some scales, I'll pay you in cake?'(Original post by DonJuan)

Re: What do you ACTUALLY do on the first few days of uni?I'm from the UK and moved to Spain. In Spain, some of the differences between the school system is that you only have 4 years of secondary school (and then the two equivalent to sixth form) and that which year you are in is decided by different factors. Not sure entirely how, but when I moved I could've either been put in the year that actually corresponded to my age UK-wise, or where I'd more or less be in the Spanish system. And they put me in the higher year.(Original post by chill543)
i dont understand the age thing
are you from scotland or early entry
?
beacause i dont know how people who are 17 go to uni :P (i dont mean to sound rude i just want to know
) - in my school it was to do with if you was born somewere in the beggining of september what year you was in i think
So nope, I wasn't quite put forward a year. I just happen to have my b-day in October
But I like to feel that I skipped a year of schooling

Re: What do you ACTUALLY do on the first few days of uni?
So i spoke to two people tonight at a gatheting i was at and they both said what most people here have, that keep your door OPEN, bring plenty of booze (they said they made friends this way) and say yes to everything outing you can! The also said their reps organised house parties etc and socialised everyone together to get coversations rolling, but one girl then told me not to get too intoxicated the first few nights as one girl she knew got so drunk and managed to piss on the rep (i have no idea lol)

Well I'd definitely recommend joining societies, there are absolutely loads of them http://leicesterunion.com/clubs - have a browse and see what you'd be interested in
societies are a great way of meeting people and socialising

Re: What do you ACTUALLY do on the first few days of uni?
On the first night me and my flatmates ordered some takeaway from an online platform that showed all of the best places to order from in the city as none of had any idea of what to eat! Plus we were new to town and wanted something unhealthy and delicious to wash down all of the beer

P.S There are other services available of course! I don't want to be accused of doing shameless advertising

Re: What do you ACTUALLY do on the first few days of uni?
Obviously I need to go to Germany...especially if they have buckets of sour cherries

Maybe in an attempt not to poison my future house mates (either with my baking or with alcohol) I may ply them with sweets
In terms of buying stuff for uni...I have wrote a very detailed list!! Now I just need to get paid so I can start buying some of the stuff.
